Well, that escalated quickly.

My friend dropped in from New York for the weekend. I was only able to hang out with him on Saturday, but we made the best of it with tons of beer and a full season of Top Gear!

De Garde Bu Weisse to get things started.

De Garde Rougie: Tons better than the draft version. A little bit more tartness and a lot more red wine barrel in comparison to the draft version. I’m sad I didn’t buy more of this one. A-

De Garde Cornelio Nunez: I didn’t have my coffee that day. This proved a worthy substitute.

Block 15 Turbulent Consequence – Premiere Annee: So damn good, right up there with Golden Canary and Beatification. A

Upright Barrel Aged Flora Rustica: I love this beer, LOVE LOVE LOVE. A/A+

Commons Maybelle: Still aging gracefully, but this bottle has a bit of sulfur to it that I haven’t experienced in previous bottles. A-

Logsdon Fresh Hop Seizoen: This beer is amazing, much better than last year’s version. Might be up there with Seizoen Bretta in terms of flavor. A-

Defiant Tripel: Pretty simple beer, nothing crazy about it. B

Firestone Walker Sucaba: I forgot how much I enjoy this beer, I need to get my hands on more of the caramely goodness. A-

Firestone Walker XV: Really good, the year and a half of cellaring really helped mellow it out. Too bad it was my only one. A

Surly Darkness: Best non-barrel aged stout imo. DARKNESS!! A-

Upright Special Herbs: My favorite Upright beer resurfaces! A+

Drie Fonteinen Armand ‘4 Winter: Need I say more?! Best beer of the night. ALL THE A+’s!

De Garde Loak Bean: Really tasty, but I’m pretty wrecked at this point. A+

Firestone Walker XVI: Forgot to open this one earlier, whoops. A/A+

Hair of the Dog Bourbon Fred 2012: Bubbles are amazing, and this beer is too. A+

Hill Farmstead Birth of Tragedy: Probably shouldn’t have opened this one…..I couldn’t even finish it. A+

Great Pairing

Videogames and De Garde Bu Weisse work out great.

Side note: Hill Farmstead growlers are the perfect size.

Sticky hands

IMAG3622That Block 15 Sticky Icky. Soo good.

Hair of the Dog Dave

Pretty sure the title says everything that anyone needs to know.

More beer?!

Yep, after the tasting at the Commons I went back to my place to pregame for a friend’s birthday party. He’s a big foodie and likes to drink, so I figured I’d make him try a bunch of different things.

Commons Emelie: Good way to start!

Firestone Walker Parabola: It’s been a while since I last had this beer. It’s very good, but it just makes me want Bourbon County Brand Stout. B+/A-

Bruery Melange 3: On the other hand, this beer is absolutely delicious. Lots of dark fruits with a bit of chocolate. A/A+

This is what happens when your friends find your 3L bottle.

Logsdon Oak Aged Bretta: Really tasty, but not sour like the first batch was. I need to find my last bottle of the stuff see what it’s tasting like right now. A-

De Garde Blu Bu Weisse: Why the hell not?! Girls love this beer! A+

De Garde Italian Plum De Say: Last growler of the stuff. I really hope they make more of this stuff! A

De Garde Cran Bu Weisse: Last growler of batch #1. I love this beer, but blu bu weisse might be the tiniest bit better. A+

And the Syndicate loses a member

Our tasting group is down by one. My friend is moving back to Germany with his wife. As a little send off, we had a bottle share at the Commons. Please note that this was the same day as the De Garde release. My life is really difficult sometimes.

Commons Gose: Really enjoyable, and served as a great palate cleanser between samples. B

No idea what this is, but it was good. B+

Upright Single Cask Six: One of my friend’s favorite beers, I had to open it before he left! It’s drinking ridiculously well. Too bad I don’t have any left! A+

Southampton Imperial Russian Stout 2008: Oxidized, but not bad. B

Pegs Rare Dos: Very tasty, and not infected! A

Pegs Nooner b3: this one was aged in whiskey barrels with vanilla beans. It was really good, but I prefer the rum barrel version. A

Pegs RareR Dos: I love this beer, I wish I could stockpile these and open them once a week for a year. A

Foothills Bourbon Barrel Sexual Chocolate: Very tasty, but does it taste like Pappy Van Winkle?! No clue. A

Goose Island King Henry: This beer is drinking great, much better than the last bottle I had. A+

Hill Farmstead Brother Soigne: I love this beer as well, can’t beat the combo of blood orange and lime! A/A+

This beer is a monster.

We’re gonna miss ya buddy!

De Garde Tasting Room Grand Opening

Left around 10AM for Tillamook on Saturday so I could make it early for the opening! Surprisingly, one of the friends that was driving with me wanted to leave even earlier….What a ridiculous concept.

My precious…..

This is what you call unreasonably affordable pricing. I’ll take it though!

This place is small, seriously small. I like it this way actually.

Didn’t have my coffee that morning, but a glass of Loak Bean made everything better! Dark fruits, a bit of tartness, followed up by a short of coffee and a kick of vanilla. Highly recommended. A+

Soliel D’Or: Nelson Sauvin is sooooo good. I loved this beer, probably ranked it #3 after Loak Bean and Blu Bu Weisse. A+

My friend and his 3L bottle of Soliel D’Or! 1 of 3 bottles!

I also walked away with a 3L bottle. Loak Bean for me! That’s my glass of Blu Bu Weisse on the right.

After trying the whole taplist, we decided to open some bottles of our own!

Hill Farmstead Civil Disobedience #6: Really damn good. Grassy, while still retaining some nelson sauvin and juicy aspects from Hill Farmstead Juicy (used as part of the blend). A+

Drie Fonteinen Doesjel: Surprised at the number of bubbles in this bottle. This bottle is far superior to any I’ve had in the past. Blew my mind! A+

Oh look, they tapped Cornelio Nunez porter! Tastes like delicious cold pressed coffee. A

Cantillon Saint Lamvinus 2009: Not as funky or sour as I would expect from a Cantillon this old, but there definitely was some increased funk and tartness. Grapes are holding up really well. I love this beer, it’s my favorite non-whale Cantillon. A+

Notice how the back of my car is sitting lower than the front……We got noticeably worse gas mileage on the way back home.

I may have spent a lot of money…..

Vast Improvement

Wow, it’s incredible how much better Cantillon’s Classic Gueuze gets after a year. This beer was really boring with minimal funk when it first came out, with just a bit of sourness. Let it sit on a shelf for a year though, and it comes out of the gate 5 pounds lighter, and 100x more furious.

Well, I wasn’t moving apartments anyway. I found out that my shelf for beer was over capacity….so that shit had to go.

And to think, I have one of the smallest “cellars” in my tasting group. We have some hoarding issues that need to be addressed with a analrapist.

Hooray for industrial shelves! And I still have some extra space WOOOOOOO!

Thank god I didn’t have to move all the beer in my wine cooler as well. What a pain in the butt.

De Garde Release Eve

Getting up bright and early tomorrow for the drive to the coast!
