Oysters and Geuze: The Sequel

About a year and a half ago, my friend James hosted our tasting group where we paired sour beer (geuze) with oysters on the half shell. It was an incredible pairing, one of the best that I’ve come across. This past weekend we decided to give it another go while watching the Broncos crush the Pats and the Seahawks eke out a win against the 49ers.

This isn’t even all the oysters we had….in total we had about 12 dozen oysters. Varieties were Kumamotos, Barron Points, Chef Creeks, and Breaksides. The Kumamotos were my favorites followed by the Breaksides. The Barron Points were really good too, but they were just enormous oysters.

Yeah….this was a little intimidating.

IMAG0753

Drie Fonteinen Armand 4 Lente: Best of the Seasons, and in my opinion, the best of the whole day. It tastes deliciously tart and funky, with a really nice grassy and fruity aspect that makes me drool. A+

IMAG0754

Drie Fonteinen Armand 4 Zomer: Not a whole lot different than Lente, but it was slightly watered down by comparison. Still one of the very best geuzes out there. A+

IMAG0755

Drie Fonteinen Armand 4 Herfst: This is probably the most distinctive of the 4 Seasons, with a very distinct mineral quality to it that I really enjoy and thought paired very well with the oysters we were eating. This is my second favorite Season. A+

IMAG0756

Drie Fonteinen Armand 4 Winter: Still amazing, but kind of simplistic compared to the other 4 Seasons. Don’t get me wrong though, you should trade for any and all of these if you have the chance. A+

Lente, Zomer, Herfst, and Winter. It’s not everyday you can try the whole set in one sitting!

IMAG0758

Drie Fonteinen Armand & Tommy: Very delicious and much tastier than when I had it fresh, but this is just not on the same level as the Seasons. A+

IMAG0759

This felt like a good palate cleanser since it had the same name as our host. It’s a good black IPA to boot too!

IMAG0762

Uli Zomergeuze El Sol: Extremely citrusy and sour, with nice funk character. This is definitely one of the best beers of the day, and probably would have been the best if it wasn’t for the fact that this beer was completely flat. A+

IMAG0763

Russian River Beatification Batch 2: This was not great, definitely over the hill. Just goes to prove that not all “walez” are super tasty anymore. B-/B

IMAG0764

Russian River Beatification Batch 3: This is definitely more like it, very tasty with a big kick of sour to the mouth and a little funk to back it up. I hear it’s peaked though. A

IMAG0765

Russian River Beatification Batch 4: This one isn’t great either…tastes like shock tarts. B

IMAG0766

Russian River Beatification Batch 5: This is the best one by far. Just trade for a ton of Batch 5 everyone! A

IMAG0767

Russian River Beatification Batch 6: This one was watery and not very sour. It needs time. B

IMAG0768

WTF is that?! That’s some serious mold in the cork…on the other hand, it is from 1984…

IMAG0769

1984 Eylenbosch: So this is the oldest beer I’ve ever had….and it was carbonated and very tasty. However, I have a hard time describing this beer, it tastes…..so old. A+

IMAG0770

Oude Beersel 2007: This was good too!

IMAG0771

Fond Gueuze Bierpallieters: This was not good. C

IMAG0772

Cantillon Classic Gueuze 2012: Wow, for the first time in my life can I say that a Cantillon Gueuze acted as a palate cleanser. Extreme palate fatigue is extreme.

IMAG0774

Cantillon Grand Cru Bruocsella: This beer sucked. C-

IMAG0775

Cantillon Saint Lamvinus 2010: Tasted good, smelled like baby diapers. B+

IMAG0776

Cantillon Saint Gilloise: Man my liver and mouth are so tired.

IMAG0778

Cantillon Iris: This was tasty too, but I was seriously struggling at this point. A

IMAG0779

The graveyard.
