Abyss, how far you’ve fallen.

4 years ago, Deschutes’ Abyss was my favorite barrel aged imperial stout. I still stand by opinion that 2010 Abyss is one of the best stouts out there. Unfortunately, Abyss has been on the decline over the last few years, culminating in 2014 Abyss, the saddest vintage since the 2009 infected bottles.

This glass was on nitro, which helped hide the overly tannic flavors of this year’s Abyss. Deschutes really needs to hold back on their use of red wine barrels to make this beer, and instead use a higher percentage of bourbon barrels. Maybe it has something to do since the original brewmaster who made Abyss is no longer with the brewery. I am not sure, but I’m not going to get any bottles of Abyss this year. It’s more expensive than Bourbon County, and not nearly as good.
