Mid-week Drinking

100% guaranteed to leave you tired and angry the next day. Worth it? Probably.

dsc_21231

A friend’s homebrew that he made for groomsmen :).

dsc_21241

Upright Fatali Four 2014: Yep, this beer ages like a champion. Tons of wine character here with brett, followed by a nice touch of heat on the finish. This beer is basically perfect.

dsc_21271

What is this man doing? We may never know.

dsc_21291

That behind the scenes glimpse of what it’s like to be a beer geek.

dsc_21281

Can’t aruge with the final product though. Uli’s Lambik 3 Fonteinen meets Orval is a spectacular beer, the best lambic I have had since the last time I opened an Armand ‘4 Season. Not all that tart, but tons of funk balanced by citrus, with an interesting finish by what I can only imagine to be the contribution of blending in some old Orval. Uli beers may not always be extremely tasty, but they are always fascinating to try. Thankfully, this beer was both really delicious and super interesting. I’ll take that.

Yes, let’s keep drinking high alcohol stouts. I won’t feel this tomorrow morning at all.

LIESSSS!

dsc_21351

Let’s continue the stupidity!

dsc_21331

Upright Blend Love: This bottle is from 2013, and just goes to continue to provide evidence that Upright might be the best sour brewery in the US in regards to how their beer behaves over time. Lots of other beers that I’ve had from other breweries get worse over time, but Upright seems to be tastier the older it gets. I don’t have many bottles from them that are older than this, but I wish I did. Fruit, funk, and tartness, all perfectly balanced.

Weekly Top Gear

This week’s episode of Top Gear is really good. The beer we had for the episode was also very good.

IMAG3337

Upright Blend Love 2013: Yep, this is an old bottle, and it has aged very gracefully. It is even more dry and crisp than before, and Upright’s beers are always extremely clean. On the other hand, the raspberry notes are still there, but the jamminess that use to be there is gone. Is it good? Oh yes. Is it better than the beer fresh? I’m not sure.

Pre-De Garde Bottleshare

Yep, we do this because we are crazy.

And because some friends flew/drove into town for the release.

I showed up late, but there was still plenty to drink!
IMAG1698

Upright Blend Love: This was the newest batch, and was pretty impressive. Less sour than I remember, but more jammy. A-

IMAG1699

Block 15 Petite Verdot: I had no idea that people still had these! The grape juice quality that this beer had is fading, but it is picking up some nice funk in exchange. Still fantastic, but I would have drank this one sooner rather than later. A-

IMAG1700

Upright 5th Anniversary Saison: Not as sour as I was expecting, but there is some nice gin character here. Too bad I can’t taste the apricot that’s supposed to be in this beer. This is kind of like a very light Special Herbs. Good, but could be better. B+/A-

IMAG1701

Upright Barrel Aged Seven: God this beer is delicious, and smells like cheese. Mild tartness with grassy, bretty, cheesiness. A

IMAG1703

Ithaca Brute: I think this is the best beer that Ithaca makes. Beautiful carbonation with a light sourness that finishes bone dry. This is the champagne of beers, not god damn Miller Lite. A-/A

IMAG1704

Ale Apothecary El Cuatro: Okay, so this one is very champagne-like as well….but way overcarbed in my opinion. I think the new batch of El Cuatro is better surprisingly, mainly due to carbonation levels. A-

IMAG1706

Rare Barrel Happy Place: Happy indeed! This beer is good! Reminds me a lot of Common’s Eidolon, which is a great thing. My first Rare Barrel experience….Solid! A-

IMAG1707

De Garde Blu Bu: Yep, still my favorite blueberry sour, excluding that freak show of a beer that was 2009 Blabaer. A+

 IMAG1702

Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze Vintage St. Valentijn Cuvee: Synthetic cork?! WHAAAAAA? No matter, this beer is still really delicious, with some mushrooms, cheese rind, and traditional Drie Fonteinen funk. Definitely lighter in carbonation than I’m used to, but that’s okay. Excellent example of a Geuze. A+

Then I went home.

IMAG1709

Drank this fucker as well. Still the best Upright beer ever made!

Big Bottleshare

Went to my first bottleshare at Tin Bucket! It was arranged by some people on BeerAdvocate and I was lucky enough to be able to attend. Cool people, great beer, in a great spot. Couldn’t be more pleased.

IMAG1031

Alesmith Barrel Aged Speedway: Delicious as always! Crazy to think that I’ve had this beer a ton of times but never actually owned a bottle…A-/A

IMAG1033

Logsdon Peche ‘n Brett: This is the brand new batch, and while good…..it wasn’t as good as Fantasia. I’m really happy to try it, and quite happy that I only have one bottle. Front loading my purchases on Fantasia was a good idea. B+

IMAG1034

Bruery Mother Funker: Sour as hell, but more palatable than before! B

IMAG1035

Cascade Bottleworks XIV: Great beer, and doesn’t taste exactly the same as all the other Cascades! A

IMAG1036

Cigar City Lacto Guava Grove: I brought this one, and really had no idea if it was going to be any good, so I was a little nervous. Turns out it’s quite good! I with the weather was nice out because this beer would be a good lemonade substitute. B+/A-

IMAG1037

Drie Fonteinen Schaerbeekse Kriek: I love this beer as much as there are vowels in its name. Great kriek. A/A+

IMAG1038

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze: I’ve had this a bunch lately….ain’t a bad thing. A

IMAG1039

DARKNESS

IMAG1040

Bo & Luke: Great label, pretty good beer.

IMAG1041

I brought this one, and it sucked. Boo. C-

IMAG1042

Funkwerks King: Really good initial sip, but got boring after a little bit.

IMAG1044

Upright Blend Love: One of Upright’s best offerings. I could drink this forever. A/A+

IMAG1045

Central Waters 16: Delicious, like candy soaked in bourbon. A/A+

IMAG1046

Oh man, we’re screwed.

IMAG1047

Kuhnhenn 4th Dementia and BA 4th Dementia: Love these beers. A/A+

IMAG1048

Russian River Consecration B3: Best bottle of Consecration that I’ve had…maybe bigger bottles is better? A

IMAG1049

Jester King Aurelian Lure: Great apricot sour, only West Ashely and Fou Foune are better for the style. A/A+

IMAG1050

Goose Island King Henry: I’ve had this bottle forever, and now it’s dead. On the bright side, this bottle was delicious and much better than the last couple of bottles I have tried at tastings. KH is honestly one of the best barleywines ever made. A+

IMAG1051 IMAG1052

Prairie and Pirate Bomb!: I enjoyed Prairie Bomb! more, the vanilla was just so good. A

IMAG1057

Drank bottles got drank.

De Garde Vin Lee Release

After the Super Nebula release, we all make the 2 hour drive up to Tillamook in order to make the De Garde release + bottle share. It’s a lot of driving for sure, but it definitely pays dividends!

IMAG0839

Nice little line outside the brewery on a rare sunny winter day.

IMAG0838

Upright Blend Love: Doing very well, and very suitable as a “standing in line” beer. A

IMAG0837

Ooooh look! It’s the beer allocations for the Keepers Society! Much jimmies will be rustled.

IMAG0841

DAT Coolship!

IMAG0840

De Garde Imperial Vin Bu: One of the best beers from De Garde so far! I would place it above the raspberry variant and below the boysenberry version. A+

IMAG0843

There were a lot of people at the event, and it was run very well.

IMAG0844

Huh….that name looks familiar. This becomes important later.

IMAG0845

Fire Engine #9: Golden raspberry sour that tastes a little like a diet version of Block 15’s Framboise White. A-

IMAG0846

Night Shift Cape Codder Weisse: Apparently this is really rare, but I just don’t get as much cranberry as I was expecting. Pretty good though! B+/A-

IMAG0847

Hill Farmstead Elaborative #2: Pretty good, but I really want to say this was terrible because I lost a bottle of this when it was being shipped to me. B+

IMAG0848

Jester King Atrial Rubicite: Yep, still tastes like jam! A-/A

IMAG0851

De Garde Vin Lee: Holy mutant batman! This beer is incredible, neck and neck with Imperial Vin Bu as the best beer of the day. A+

IMAG0852

New Belgium La Folie: Cage and Corked La Folie is superior to the more recent versions. Non-pasteurization is the way to go! A+

IMAG0853

Bruery Mocha Wednesday: This beer is insane. If you have the means, track one down. A+

IMAG0854

Upright Special Herbs: DEM SPECIAL HERBS!!!!!!!!!

IMAG0855

Olde Hickory Lindley Park: Tastes like Thanksgiving! A-/A

IMAG0856

Sante Adarius Love’s Armor: Best batch so far! B+/A-

IMAG0858

Jester King thingy thingama thing: I’m reaching the point of not caring…

IMAG0859

Cigar City Smoked Imperial Stout: Nice and peaty! A-

IMAG0860

Block 15 Super Nebula: Yeah, just came from the brewery, but couldn’t help myself! A

IMAG0861

MMmmm, beer….

IMG_83511897584211

Remember that barrel I showed earlier? Here’s a picture of a weird man drinking straight from the barrel. I heard it was quite good.

IMAG0849

Oh god, what have we done?!

IMAG0874

SOON.

More De Garde + Bottleshare

Release of Mulligan in bottles happened on Thursday, so I dropped in really quick before heading over to a bottleshare.

IMAG3446

Bottle of Mulligan on the left, Cranberry Bu Weisse on the right. I think batch 1 is better, but this new batch is still phenomenal.

Onwards to BeerMongers!

IMAG3447

Kuhnhenn Raspberry Eisbock: Way to start a tasting with the sweetest beer here you idiot. Ugh. It was tasty though, just too sweet for me.

IMAG3448

Bruery Bottleworks XII: WHERE ARE THE RASPBERRIES?! Other than that, tasty. B

IMAG3450

Hill Farmstead Birth of Tragedy: Just as good as always, the 8 months that this has been aging has really brought the coffee forward. I can taste it now! A

IMAG3451

More bottles arrived shortly after this was taken. Gotta love Thursdays?

IMAG3452

Fantome Extra Sour: A Fantome beer that doesn’t remind me of bacon?! WHAT?!  A

IMAG3453

Cantillon Gueuze 100% Lambic Bio: Always tasty. I was surprised how much better this beer was in comparison to the 375 ml bottles that I have opened in the past. A-/A

IMAG3454

Hangar 24 Bourbon Cru: Not bad, but nothing really special. B

IMAG3455

Dystopia is very generic.

IMAG3457

HOLY SHIT WHALES!!!!

Southampton Black Raspberry Lambic: Really damn good. Very savory for a raspberry sour (I wouldn’t call this one a lambic). Nice dry finish too. It trades ridiculously high, too high for what it taste like…..but we all know that taste doesn’t correlate to trade value. A+

IMAG3458

Crooked Stave Surette Reserva: Meh. C

IMAG3459

Crooked Stave Petite Sour with Hibiscus & Cinnamon: I love this beer. Too bad I don’t have any left. A-

IMAG3460

Goose Island King Henry: This beer has certainly dropped off a bit, but given that, it’s still quite good. I also think the original price sticker is a nice touch! B+/A-

IMAG3461

Upright Blend Love 2012: This is aging better than the newer, 2013 version. I love this beer. Shame to think that my last bottle is going to Guatemala. A

IMAG3462

Surly Darkness: This is what Dark Lord wants to be. A-

IMAG3463

Revolution 3 Year Beer: LOTS of rum in this one. B+

IMAG3464

Crooked Stave Origins: Very tasty, but I wish the label said, “Grand Cru” on it. A-

IMAG3465

Upright Lactovasilios: Not doing bad at all. I wish it was more sour though. B+/A-

Much Better

This is how you should watch Game of Thrones.

DSC_6374

Upright Blend Love: Soooo much better than the Iron Throne beer.

DSC_6376

Upright Blend Edmunds (in a Tired Hands growler): Even better than Blend Love. It’s the tits. A
