Christmas Eve Drinking

You guys will have to forgive my tardiness, it was a really serious week of drinking and just looking at the photos made my stomach feel weird.

IMAG1641

Best beer from De Molen, hands down.

IMAG1642

de Garde Lee Noir: Old de Garde beers are aging pretty well. The slight sherry flavors due to oxidation have really brought another dimension to this already tasty brew.

IMAG1643

You can never have too much BA Ten Fidy. It’s simply too good.

IMAG1644

Sadly, this 2012 bottle of Abyss was not nearly as tasty.

IMAG1645

de Garde Stone Bu: Oh my god is this beer sour. It’s delicious once it’s burnt away your taste buds, but those first three sips are really quite painful.

IMAG1646

Bruery Rum Barrel Black Tuesday: WHAT DID I DO TO DESERVE THIS?!!!!! It was actually very tasty, but my god please make it 12%.

IMAG1647

New Glarus R&D 2015 Golden Ale: Very tasty beer, makes me want to start dabbling in more R&D beers.

IMAG1648

de Garde Belle Ensemble: Extremely tasty, with a nice tartness that lasts through the taste, and a bit of funk to balance it back out.

Cause for Celebration

So I’ve been working on a rock climbing route outside on lead, and I finally got it! It was terrifying….but I get to have some celebration beers!

IMAG0408

Bruery Mocha Wednesday: Dehydrated? Check, 19.2% beer? Check!

IMAG0409

Commons Trillium: This beer has really taken off, probably my favorite Commons beer to date! I really like Commons, but I think they might be releasing them a few months too early, since their bottles come out just about perfect after aging in my closet for a few months.

DSC_0018

This was a great and terrible idea. Willet 11yr bottle #768 is the winner.

IMAG0410

Jester King Sin Frontera: Smarties.

DSC_0019

Uli/BrauArt Lambik Peated Weizen: If you don’t like Islay, you will hate this beer, but if you do, this thing is absolutely awesome. I’ll never get the chance to have something like this ever again.

Going Away Party

One of my friends is moving back to California, so he proposed a bottleshare at his favorite beer shop. Why did it have to be a Wednesday at 7:30PM?

IMAG3698

Short warm-up

IMAG3699

Batch #6, really, really good. Probably the best batch of West Ashley I’ve had. Great balance between funk and apricot.

IMAG3700

Gin bomb.

IMAG3701

Couldn’t taste this one after the previous 2 beers…

IMAG3702

Sour berlinerweiss from the Bruery. Not actually a berliner, but at a measly 8%, it is probably one of the Bruery’s lighter beers.

IMAG3703

Eclipse Rittenhouse Rye: Better than Masterpiece.

IMAG3704 IMAG3705

I like the new Olde Hickory labels. The beer is also good.

IMAG3706 IMAG3708

New bottles from pFriem.

IMAG3707

SOUR.

IMAG3709

NOT GOOD. Veritas 013. As Uli said to me two years ago, “this beer should not have been sold”

IMAG3710

Crooked Stave Batch 60: Like a super fancy Hose.

IMAG3711 IMAG3712

Firestone Walker does good sour beers, but should sell them in big bottles.

IMAG3713

Infected.

IMAG3714

Actually pretty good!

IMAG3715

Tastes like……Christmas.

IMAG3716

Might be my favorite beer from Trillium so far! Very good in this sea of sours and stouts!

IMAG3717

Why would you bury wizards?!

IMAG3720

BOOOOZY.

IMAG3721

Addition of coffee ice cream is nice.

IMAG3722

Troegs: This brings back lots of nostalgia for my college days when Flying Mouflan was still just Scratch #4

IMAG3723

This is an old bottle, it’s very good, but a shadow of its former self.

IMAG3724

I don’t even remember this beer.

IMAG3725

This tasted like water. It was meh, like most Side Projects I’ve had. Perhaps I lack the nuance and sophistication required to appreciate these.

IMAG3726

Toppling Goliath SR-71: Remember a little while back when I had the new batch of Assassin and said it was really, really good (which was way better than b1 btw)? This beer is not nearly as tasty. It spent too long in the barrels in my opinion, and the barrel character of the beer has basically eliminated any flavor of stout this beer used to have.

IMAG3727

This was tasty! I still hate the name of the brewery though.

IMAG3728

Ending on lambic. Time to go home and sleeeeeeeep

RIP Bogart

My friend’s family dog passed away after a long battle with cancer. The end of his life consisted of eating T-bone steaks and barking at the families of raccoons that lived on the property. Little to his knowledge, his humans had been going through 50 lb bags of dog food each week in order attract the raccoons for Bogart to bark at.

RIP Bogart, the stalwart guardian of the house, protecting it from the vicious raccoons that threatened his humans every night.

I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the dog in the darkness. I am the watcher at the door. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to this House, for this night and all the nights to come.

…and now his watch has ended.

Bottle Share @ Growler Guys: The massacre of livers.

Growler Guys hosted a large bottle share for a bunch of the beer geeks in Portland. We all decided to bring beers that we wanted to share with people/couldn’t finish on our own.

So everyone brought big imperial stouts.

IMAG2894

I thought it would be funny to bring a carbonated Hair of the Dog beer. SodaStream works, every time. In this particular case, Adam from the Wood

IMAG2895

10 Barrel Cucumber Crush: This beer is perfect for getting ready. I fucking love this shit. A+

IMAG2896

Hill Farmstead Arthur: Mmmm, this is not an imperial stout, I’m just not quite ready yet. A

IMAG2897

Cantillon Fou Foune 2014: This is superior to the 2013 vintage. Way more apricots in this one. Thanks to my buddy Bruce for bringing this one! A+

IMAG2898

Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek 2014 Cork : Bruce strikes again. Not quite sure that this is as good as the 2013 I opened a few weeks ago, but whatever, it’s all delicious. A+

IMAG2901

That Bruce guy is such an asshole.

IMAG2900

Block 15 Super Nebula: Mmm, this one is the batch that was aged in Pappy Van Winkle 20 barrels. Can you taste the /rar?! A

IMAG2902

Cigar City Marshal Zhukov B1: This beer is 6 years old…..and it’s aged surprisingly well! I imagined an oxidized mess, but it turned out to be pretty good. On the other hand, you should drink this one fresh. B

IMAG2903

Jester King Atrial Rubicite: Best beer that Jester King makes by a mile. Do you like raspberry jam? I do, so I love this beer. A

IMAG2904

Hangar 24 Pugachev’s Cobra: Let the stouts begin.

IMAG2905

Alesmith Vietnamese Coffee Speedway: This is the best variant. So ridiculously good. A+

IMAG2908

Alesmith Kopi Luwak Barrel Aged Speedway: Such a long name, but it’s really damn good. A/A+

IMAG2906

Hill Farmstead E.: NOT A STOUT THANK GOD! I’ve had too many stouts in the last week or so…

IMAG2911

Side Project Saison de Rouge: This one is really good, definitely better than the other Side Projects I’ve had aside from Fuzzy.

IMAG2912

Bruery Chocolate Rain: This is not the beer to have last, but we did it anyway.

So, these are just some of the bottles that showed up at the tasting. If I had to guess, I would say about 50-60 bottles were there, but I’d rather not die, so I only had the ones I listed above.

Why not keep going, what could possibly go wrong?

My liver will remember this pain for a long time.

IMAG2865

Dark Horse Bourbon Barrel Aged Plead the 5th: Oh, I like this beer, a benchmark barrel-aged imperial stout!

IMAG2866

Apparently they did a special barrel selection too? Hmm.

IMAG2867

Fifty Fifty Coconut Eclipse: Imagine Almond Joy + an enormous imperial stout. This is good, but way too cloying for me. I’ll take a Proprietors instead.

IMAG2868

Mikkeller skull fucking in a bottle: This was retarded. So awful.

IMAG2870

Fifty Fifty Vanilla Coffee Eclipse: This one was good, but if you put vanilla in a stout, you’re going to get compared to 2010 Bourbon County Vanilla Stout, and then you’ll lose that comparison.

IMAG2871

Cigar City Double Barrel Hunahpu’s: Probably my favorite beer of the tasting, absolutely amazing. Best chili beer out there in my opinion.

IMAG2872

Jackie O’s Farewell my Friends: a 5 year old apple sour? Really damn good, even if I don’t taste any apples here.

IMAG2874

OH THANK GOD A PALATE CLEANSER!

IMAG2875 IMAG2876 IMAG2877

Fremont Kentucky Dark Star, Coffee KDS, and Spice Wars KDS: Coffee wins.

IMAG2878

Bruery Grey Monday: At around 18%, this was delicious, but probably not the smartest idea to open it last…..

Big Bottleshare

Went to my first bottleshare at Tin Bucket! It was arranged by some people on BeerAdvocate and I was lucky enough to be able to attend. Cool people, great beer, in a great spot. Couldn’t be more pleased.

IMAG1031

Alesmith Barrel Aged Speedway: Delicious as always! Crazy to think that I’ve had this beer a ton of times but never actually owned a bottle…A-/A

IMAG1033

Logsdon Peche ‘n Brett: This is the brand new batch, and while good…..it wasn’t as good as Fantasia. I’m really happy to try it, and quite happy that I only have one bottle. Front loading my purchases on Fantasia was a good idea. B+

IMAG1034

Bruery Mother Funker: Sour as hell, but more palatable than before! B

IMAG1035

Cascade Bottleworks XIV: Great beer, and doesn’t taste exactly the same as all the other Cascades! A

IMAG1036

Cigar City Lacto Guava Grove: I brought this one, and really had no idea if it was going to be any good, so I was a little nervous. Turns out it’s quite good! I with the weather was nice out because this beer would be a good lemonade substitute. B+/A-

IMAG1037

Drie Fonteinen Schaerbeekse Kriek: I love this beer as much as there are vowels in its name. Great kriek. A/A+

IMAG1038

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze: I’ve had this a bunch lately….ain’t a bad thing. A

IMAG1039

DARKNESS

IMAG1040

Bo & Luke: Great label, pretty good beer.

IMAG1041

I brought this one, and it sucked. Boo. C-

IMAG1042

Funkwerks King: Really good initial sip, but got boring after a little bit.

IMAG1044

Upright Blend Love: One of Upright’s best offerings. I could drink this forever. A/A+

IMAG1045

Central Waters 16: Delicious, like candy soaked in bourbon. A/A+

IMAG1046

Oh man, we’re screwed.

IMAG1047

Kuhnhenn 4th Dementia and BA 4th Dementia: Love these beers. A/A+

IMAG1048

Russian River Consecration B3: Best bottle of Consecration that I’ve had…maybe bigger bottles is better? A

IMAG1049

Jester King Aurelian Lure: Great apricot sour, only West Ashely and Fou Foune are better for the style. A/A+

IMAG1050

Goose Island King Henry: I’ve had this bottle forever, and now it’s dead. On the bright side, this bottle was delicious and much better than the last couple of bottles I have tried at tastings. KH is honestly one of the best barleywines ever made. A+

IMAG1051 IMAG1052

Prairie and Pirate Bomb!: I enjoyed Prairie Bomb! more, the vanilla was just so good. A

IMAG1057

Drank bottles got drank.
