Goodbye Beers

Sadly said goodbye to some friends who moved back to Boston the other day. Since they are both beer geeks we did the whole bottle share thingy before hitting a few bars.

20161006_211755

Yeah, this beer is weird. Not recommended.

20161014_233143

Holy Mountain Guava Table: Smells like poop, tastes amazing. Like funky guava juice. I need to go and get some of that Hawaiian guava juice sometime.

20161014_225146

Fucking mead.

20161014_223259

Yep, the blend of Broken Truck No. 2 and Leaner is greater than the sum of their parts. Look at the girl in the background dance because it’s so good. She can barely contain herself! ALL IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE!

20161014_221826

Leaner is pretty good on it’s own too.

20161014_222017

Meanwhile….someone didn’t want to hang out with us.

20161014_210936

Cigar City Marshal Zhukov: God this stuff is good. They should barrel age all of it.

20161014_213722

Goose Island Proprietors 2014: Don’t mind the judging lady in the background. She’s just hating. This beer is incredible now, with the cinnamon nicely integrated into the bourbon character of the base beer. I don’t know how much longer this beer can age, but if you have one, drink it now!

20161013_222135

Why good morning to you back! Mmmmmmmm

20161013_220621

I honestly can’t remember what this one was like….sorry.

Cellarmaker The Glow: Baby Hill Farmstead Abner?!

20161013_205553

Sante Adairius Saison Bernice: well this beer is just terrible, which is why I drink it all the time.

20161013_204348

Yeah….don’t remember this one either.

Miyazaki and Beer

dsc_21101

Clearly you need to drink when watched anime movies. de Garde’s Special Violet easily fit the bill with it’s huge jam flavors.

dsc_21111

Casey Cherry The Cut: Classic Casey. Extremely poopy on the nose, but actually tastes delicious. Tons of cherries just hanging out here behind a veil of sulfur.

Stone Fruit Tasting

I don’t want to see peaches or apricots for a while. I still can’t taste anything.

IMAG2687

Pizza Boy Permasmile: What the hell is a Pennsylvania wild ale? One that was made by the blood, sweat, and tears of the Amish? Anyways, this beer is pretty good, but I expect it cost something north of $30, which is unacceptable.

IMAG2688

Odell Zardi Ale: Not very good.

IMAG2689

Night Shift Mystery Weisse: I really liked this beer when it first came out, and it’s still really good. Things have changed, as the beer has become more sour over the last two years or so. It reminds me of sour, green mangoes, and it’s tasty.

IMAG2690

Wow I’m bad at taking photos. Thankfully, Quetsche Tilquin is the opposite of the quality of this photo. It tastes fantastic, and since plums are used, it counts in this stone fruit tasting! One of the best beers of the night if you ask me.

IMAG2691

de Garde Biere Stone: Wow, the “Biere” series from de Garde just consistently kills it. Big peach and apricot presence but you can still taste the chardonnay barrel, it’s almost SARA like. However, the finish isn’t quite as strong as SARA’s, but it trades that for huge fruit notes.

IMAG2692

Casey Peach  The Cut: SO. MUCH. SULFUR. However, after letting my glass breathe for half an hour or so this beer almost tastes like a geuze, but I didn’t get a ton of peaches here.

IMAG2693

de Garde Stone Bu: Batch 1! This beer is incredibly sour now, but it still has most of its peach flavors intact. I’m not sure if I have any left, but I think it’s about time to drink these, they aren’t getting better.

IMAG2694

Sante Adairius Westly: This second batch tastes way different than the original batch. It’s much less fruity, and way funkier. I am not sure which batch I prefer, but I think I’d love to mix the two batches and have a field day.

IMAG2695

Cantillon Fou Foune: This is the new 2015 batch, and it’s honestly a little disappointing. I expected it to blow Westly out of the water, but it wasn’t even close. Neither fruity nor funky, this beer needs time in the hopes that it will improve.

IMAG2696

Sante Adairius: Southern Sunrise: Oh wow, I really, really like this beer. Probably the best or second best beer of the night, and better than Westly. Lots of peach, some funkiness, and all that delicious wine barrel finish that I love SARA for.

IMAG2697

Ugh, another turd photo.

IMAG2698

Battery acid.

Casey Family Preserves

It was really nice out here in Portland over the weekend. Of course I stayed inside and drank beer with my buddies instead. Worth it.

IMAG2230 IMAG2223 IMAG2222 IMAG2233

Okay, so I preferred the Casey Family Preserves in order from best to least tasty: Nectarine, Cherry, Grape, and Plum. Please note, all of these beers were very poopy when they were opened and poured. It’s best to let them breathe for two minutes or so before sticking your face into your glass.

Steak and Beer for Days

Seriously, leftovers for days.

Ribeyes, culotte, bavette, flat iron, and some cold smoked and brined pork chops. 9.2 lbs.

Then….we drank enough beer to crush us all.

 IMAG2170

Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze: This 2015 bottle is pretty good, shows a lot of promise in a few years.

IMAG2169

Upright Fatali Four: Getting spicier, I’m digging it.

IMAG2178

Hill Farmstead Susan: This beer is really good, definitely one of my favorite Hill Farmsteads that you can only get in growlers.

IMAG2177

Casey Peach Fruit Stand: Best fruit stand yet, this one actually has enough peach flavor to stand up to the fruit bombs that are de Garde.

IMAG2176

Hill Farmstead Florence: I’m normally not that into this one compared to other Hill Farmstead beers, but this batch is fantastic. Really reminds me of old batches of Arthur.

IMAG2175

Hill Farmstead Earl: The oatmeal really improves the mouthfeel on this beer, but there just isn’t enough coffee here. Next time, aeropress.

IMAG2173

Hill Farmstead Everett: Yep, still the best porter around!

IMAG2172

Upright Hearts’ Beat: Very tasty, but it needs time to funk up in my opinion. It’s just too sweet right now.

IMAG2186

de Garde Imperial Blu Bu: Mmmmmmmmmm, cow farts.

IMAG2185

de Garde Blu Bu Weisse: Old de Garde walez anyone? This beer is absolutely fantastic, but the real value here is the novelty of having one of the first beers that de Garde ever made, and if I remember correctly, this was the only beer that de Garde made that used fresh fruit that they picked themselves.

IMAG2184

Sante Adairius Appreciation: Better now than the last time I had it, the berry flavors that were not very distinct before have definitely transitioned into a clearly boysenberry taste. It’s great. This is about the time where my palate ran off and died in the woods.

IMAG2183

Cigar City Hunahpu’s: Definitely better fresh than aged, drink em now folks. No one is going to want to trade for your regular ass hunahpu’s when it’s two years old.

IMAG2182

The Alchemist Focal Banger: Almost as good as Heady Topper, I think the last time I had this beer was when it was still being sold in a plain ass can with a dumb sticker that would fall off if the can got wet. Big problem when condensation forms on the can the moment you remove it from the fridge!

IMAG2181

Alesmith Hammerhead Speedway w/ Vanilla Beans: Okay, Alesmith didn’t add the vanilla beans, but they should. The espresso in this beer and the bitterness that comes along with it really stands up to the addition of vanilla. I think this is even better than putting vanilla beans into BCBS. Srsly.

IMAG2180

Hill Farmstead Shirley Mae: Yeah, really wasn’t expecting this to be a porter (clearly didn’t read the fine print), but after having Everett I’m broken.

IMAG2191

de Garde The Broken Truck: Oh, hey there batch 1 The Broken Truck. You taste amazing, but I’m really, really drunk. It has flavor. hnngh.

IMAG2190

de Garde The Anniversary: Yep, still drunk.

IMAG2189

de Garde Biere Rose: Wow, this beer actually aged well! I drank all mine thinking that it was amazing fresh and didn’t show much promise in the long run. I’m a dummy.

IMAG2188

de Garde Biere Violet: TASTE LIKE BERRIES AND THANGS.

IMAG2187

Uhhhh, I barely remember this one. I assume it was good!

Oh, this is a large box.

My Hill Farmstead trader is just the best.

But wait, there’s more!

Barrel Aged Goodness

Over the weekend my friend hosted a little bottle share with barrels being the theme. Anything that spent time in a barrel was fair game. I had a great time.

IMAG2097

de Garde Imperial Boysen Bu: This beer has come a long ways. Back when this beer was released, I thought that while it was good, it wasn’t nearly as good as the other beers that were released at the same time. After a year of plotting and brooding in a closet, this beer has finally come into its stride. Hugely fruity with a lot of funk to balance out the jam, it was a great way to kick of barrel aged beer tasting.

IMAG2098

Cycle &+: You can definitely tell that this beer was really good at one point, and it is still tasty, but it is just tasting a little bit old at this point. While the beer industry is going nuts with putting adjuncts like cinnamon, cocoa niba, chilies, chocolate, and the tears of lesser beer geeks into their stouts, it ultimately leads to a messy beer that doesn’t age well. Better drink your crazy adjunct stouts sooner rather than later boys, or weird off tastes are coming.

IMAG2099 IMAG2101 IMAG2100

Wicked Weed Angel Series: White Angel was my favorite by far, tasting like cider mixed with champagne, in a good way.

IMAG2102

Funky Buddha The Love Below: Frankly, I like the Outkast album way more than the beer. It tasted incredibly fake and artificial. I miss the old days when Funky Buddha was small and Maple Bacon Coffee Porter was good.

IMAG2103

Oskar Blues Death By Coconut: Palate cleanser? Sure thing!

IMAG2104

Grimm Maple Bourbon Barrel Double Negative: Pretty tasty, one of the better adjunct stouts from the night. However, I would love to try a regular bourbon barrel aged version of this instead, because I miss straight up barrel aged stouts, none of this other ingredient nonsense!

IMAG2105

Casey Cherry Family Preserves: Wow this beer is great! 8% too! Definitely one of the better Casey beers I’ve had, this beer is clean and well attenuated, has great funkiness, big sour notes, and enough fruit to almost be confused with a de Garde beer! HNNNGH.

IMAG2106

Cycle Thursday: A lot of Cycle beers have been extremely thin lately, and I don’t know if that is something they are intentionally going for, but it seriously detracts from an otherwise good stout. I want my stout like motor oil, not like water.

IMAG2107

Upright Rose/FP Blend: Okay, I’m an Upright homer, and everyone should know this. With that bias in mind, this was my favorite of the night. Super dry, bright, and crisp, with funkiness and a little bit of fruit that blends well with the oak characteristics that came with the aging process. The up front taste is a little lack luster, but the back end comes in so strong that you simply forget that the beer didn’t taste like much initially.

IMAG2109

Casey East Bank: Way better than the last bottle I had, despite it being from the same batch. Bottle variation in a tiny brewery? No way!

IMAG2110

Cycle Monday: FINALLY, a stout from Cycle with awesome mouthfeel! MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED! Best adjunct stout of the night, hands down.

IMAG2111

Block 15 Breakfast with the Buffalo: Great beer, but way more bitter out of the bottle than on draft.

IMAG2112

de Garde Framiscus: A sleeper beer from de Garde, this beer is absolutely fantastic but no one seems to care about it. Fine by me, they can all go chase after the latest flavor of the week while I drink beer that actually tastes good.

IMAG2113

Night cap!
