Before Jetting Off Again

I have been extremely bad at staying in Portland over the last few weeks, and it isn’t going to improve. Since I hadn’t seen so many of my friends lately I had people over so we could hang out and catch up before I fly away again.

IMAG2793

Hill Farmstead Brother Soigne: This bottle is a year and a half old, and I think it’s in its prime right now. Super clean, but the tartness has developed a little bit more. One of my favorites from HF.

IMAG2794

Upright Old Tom Blend: Only 1 of 60ish bottles, and it is absolutely fantastic. Like Special Herbs without the spice, but with the gin finish turned up to 11. I’m a huge fan of this beer and it was definitely one of the best beers of the night.

IMAG2795

Fanta Flora Blen F’n Diculous #3: Pretty good, maybe a little too sour, but good effort from Fanta Flora. Note: improve your damn spelling next time.

IMAG2796

Central Waters Eighteen: This beer is really good. Boozy as is typical with Central Waters’ big stouts, but it isn’t thin like their beers. IT HAS VISCOSITY! YESSSSSS. Chocolate, coffee, and barrel.

IMAG2797

Dark Horse Bourbon Barrel Plead the 5th: REALLY GOOD MMMM ROASTY!

IMAG2798

Drie Fonteinen Straffe Winter: I don’t like faro beers, but this was actually decent. That being said, a regular lambic this old would have been out of this world, whereas this one was merely moderately tasty. Listen Drie Fonteinen, I’m really happy you stopped bottling faro beers.

IMAG2799

de Garde Imperial Apricot Bu b1: One of the big boys, batch 1 Imperial Apricot Bu. At this age, it tastes like straight fou foune (a fresh bottle). Tons of apricots are still present here, and the funk that has developed over the last three years has kind of brought this in line with a super fresh bottle of lambic. So what I said about stone fruit beers from de Garde and how they don’t age? This is the big exception to the rule.

Breaking in the new island

Got a new kitchen island to replace my shitty IKEA island. Had to christen it properly. These aren’t in any particular order, you’ll survive.

 IMAG2353

Wicked Weed Genesis: Quite tasty, but I’m really not getting tropical fruits here….more like another version of Russian River Temptation.

IMAG2355

4 Hands Brewing Madagascar: I’m sorry to say this, but you were an okay beer, but too much carbonation plus many other tastier beers led you to being dumped into the sink at 3:30AM. Maybe next time we’ll budget livers accordingly. Or not.

IMAG2356

Central Waters Cassian Sunset: Uhhhhhhh, it had a thin mouthfeel but smelled awesome. Yes, memory is incredible.

IMAG2357

The Rare Barrel Becoming: I really like this beer despite being a small Rare Barrel hater. This beer reminds me of a Sante Adairius beer more than an Rare Barrel one. Praise doesn’t get much higher than that.

IMAG2359

Dieu du Ciel! Double Barrel Peche Mortel: HOLY GOD I LOVE THIS BEER. I find it kind of hilarious that it’s hard to find a barrel aged beer these days with only one adjunct. God have mercy on us all.

IMAG2360

Looks like I had this beer twice trololol.

IMAG2361

Hair of the Dog Matt: This 2013 bottle is absolutely singing right now. Tons of apple brandy and the slight oxidation cuts the sweet nature of the beer. I think we opened this at 2AM, so we’re all very smart.

IMAG2362

ALL BOW DOWN TO THE KITTEH. Seriously though, Biere Rouge is drinking fantastic right now, and is a great palate cleanser to all the dark beers we had been drinking previously.

IMAG2354

Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek: This 2011 (2013 cork date) bottle is picking up an enormous amount of funk. I really like it. Best beer of the night!

IMAG2358

Until this motherfucker came in and blew all of our collective minds. Bow down to Drie Fonteinen’s Armand ‘4 Herfst!

Movie Night

Watched Interstellar and Dark Knight the other day while crushing some delicious beers.

IMAG0096

Lawson’s Sip of Sunshine: Very tasty, with lots of citrus up front.

IMAG0097

Hill Farmstead Flora Blue/Black: Apparently this beer suffers from some bottle variation, which has resulted in some bottles being really not good. Luckily for me, my bottle was tasty! Fruit presence is mild, but I think that is a by-product of just drinking a lot of De Garde. Finish is a little goofy, but overall a great beer. That being said, regular Flora is way better.

IMAG0098

This Treehouse beer was delicious.

IMAG0099

IPA beer is IPA-ey.

IMAG0100

Apparently I can’t take photos in focus.

IMAG0101

Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Barleywine: A little boozy, but very tasty with lots of caramel and toffee.

IMAG0102

Troegs Barrel Aged Flying Mouflan: This is one of the best smelling beers in existence. It is also a really good barleywine, I would place it just behind Bourbon County Barleywine in terms of deliciousness.

IMAG0103

Hill Farmstead Brother Soigne: Palate Cleanser!

IMAG0105

Pelican Mother of All Storms: This beer is really underrated. It’s one of the best barleywines being made today.

IMAG0106

Goose Island King Henry: Well, shit. Really fantastic beer, but Mother of All Storms was just a tad bit better than this particular bottle of King Henry. This was a recent acquisition by a buddy, so we really don’t know how this bottle was stored for the last 4 years. My guess is someone’s smelly closet.

IMAG0107

Best beer of the night. Also crushed my liver.

Poor Life Choices

Don’t do a beer bracket with imperial stouts. Just…don’t.

IMAG3632

But of course, we did.

Time to warm up, stretch those hammies.

IMAG3628

Not good enough, still have some knots in my livery bits.

IMAG3630

Getting closer…

IMAG3631

Okay, feelin’ nice and warmed up. Let’s do this.

IMAG3634 IMAG3633

First match-up: Westbrook 4th Anniversary vs Westbrook 3rd Anniversary: Both are tasty, but Westbrook 3rd squeaked past because the 4th Anniversary tried to juggle too many adjuncts.

Winner: Westbrook 3rd Anniversary

IMAG3635 IMAG3636

Next up, Westbrook Mexican Cake vs Alesmith Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Speedway Stout (jesus it’s a long name): As much as I like Mexican Cake, Speedway wins hands down with its delicious cold-brew coffee flavor. One person who claimed to hate coffee actually liked it. We’ll save her hate for coffee for another time.

IMAG3637 IMAG3638

Block 15 Super Nebula vs Goose Island Bourbon County Coffee Stout: BCBCS unanimously wins here. If it were a different vintage of Super Nebula, things could easily be different.

IMAG3639 IMAG3640

Three Floyds Dark Lord vs Central Waters 16: Dark Lord…….loses by a country mile. You could have put this up against Bud Light Chelada and it would still lose. Central Waters 16 laughs all the way to our livers.

Westbrooke 4th Anniversary vs. Alesmith Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee Speedway: Speedway wins.

BCBCS vs Central Waters 16: CW 16 wins by a slim margin. First time it actually had a decent opponent too.

Speedway vs CW16: CW squeaks by with a 1-vote discrepancy between it and Speedway.

God my everything hurts.

IMAG3644

THIS IS NOT HELPING, but I like it.

IMAG3645

Still not helping, but I also like it. Look at that guy’s face in the reflection of the tulip glass. Looks like Slenderman.

IMAG3647

WILL IT BLEND?! WILL IT?!!!!!!

Kind of.

IMAG3648

Thank god it’s not a stout. Winner!

IMAG3649

This was a stupid decision.

Big Bottleshare

Went to my first bottleshare at Tin Bucket! It was arranged by some people on BeerAdvocate and I was lucky enough to be able to attend. Cool people, great beer, in a great spot. Couldn’t be more pleased.

IMAG1031

Alesmith Barrel Aged Speedway: Delicious as always! Crazy to think that I’ve had this beer a ton of times but never actually owned a bottle…A-/A

IMAG1033

Logsdon Peche ‘n Brett: This is the brand new batch, and while good…..it wasn’t as good as Fantasia. I’m really happy to try it, and quite happy that I only have one bottle. Front loading my purchases on Fantasia was a good idea. B+

IMAG1034

Bruery Mother Funker: Sour as hell, but more palatable than before! B

IMAG1035

Cascade Bottleworks XIV: Great beer, and doesn’t taste exactly the same as all the other Cascades! A

IMAG1036

Cigar City Lacto Guava Grove: I brought this one, and really had no idea if it was going to be any good, so I was a little nervous. Turns out it’s quite good! I with the weather was nice out because this beer would be a good lemonade substitute. B+/A-

IMAG1037

Drie Fonteinen Schaerbeekse Kriek: I love this beer as much as there are vowels in its name. Great kriek. A/A+

IMAG1038

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze: I’ve had this a bunch lately….ain’t a bad thing. A

IMAG1039

DARKNESS

IMAG1040

Bo & Luke: Great label, pretty good beer.

IMAG1041

I brought this one, and it sucked. Boo. C-

IMAG1042

Funkwerks King: Really good initial sip, but got boring after a little bit.

IMAG1044

Upright Blend Love: One of Upright’s best offerings. I could drink this forever. A/A+

IMAG1045

Central Waters 16: Delicious, like candy soaked in bourbon. A/A+

IMAG1046

Oh man, we’re screwed.

IMAG1047

Kuhnhenn 4th Dementia and BA 4th Dementia: Love these beers. A/A+

IMAG1048

Russian River Consecration B3: Best bottle of Consecration that I’ve had…maybe bigger bottles is better? A

IMAG1049

Jester King Aurelian Lure: Great apricot sour, only West Ashely and Fou Foune are better for the style. A/A+

IMAG1050

Goose Island King Henry: I’ve had this bottle forever, and now it’s dead. On the bright side, this bottle was delicious and much better than the last couple of bottles I have tried at tastings. KH is honestly one of the best barleywines ever made. A+

IMAG1051 IMAG1052

Prairie and Pirate Bomb!: I enjoyed Prairie Bomb! more, the vanilla was just so good. A

IMAG1057

Drank bottles got drank.

Tasting at the Commons

A couple people in our tasting group were doing in-person trades with a guy from California. Since they were getting together anyway, we decided to have a tasting!

IMAG0567

Commons Boysenberry Porter: Pretty good, but probably not something I should get before a bottle share. It’s 10%

IMAG0568

Oh, this is going to end well.

IMAG0569

Block 15 should be jumping up and down with this kind of name copying.

IMAG0571

Toppling Goliath never sticks to one design for their labels. This bottle happened to be their lager…it was lagery.

IMAG0572

Old Matilda that my friend found in the back of his fridge. It was pretty tasty.

IMAG0575

Cisco Cherry Woods: This was a pleasant surprise. I don’t know much about Cisco, but this had a nice cinnamon and cherry flavor to it. Almost like a diet version of Lou Pepe Kriek. A-

IMAG0576

Perennial Fantastic Voyage: Not sure if I like coconut stouts…. B

IMAG0577

Goose Island Bourbon County Proprietors: Okay, well it turns out I’m full of shit. This beer is incredible and is the best variant since Bourbon County Vanilla. Perfect amount of toasted coconut. Trade for this one, it is absolutely worth it. A+

IMAG0578

Goose Island Bourbon County Backyard Rye: This on the other hand, is waaaaaay too sweet. B-

IMAG0579

Midnight Sun Moscow 2011: Batch 1 Moscow is really good, I especially appreciate the dry and roasty aspects of this beer after having 2 Bourbon Counties in a row. A

IMAG0580

Ale Apothecary Sahalien: This beer is fantastic, like a super sour Flora. However, there is a funny pickle smell to this beer, other than that, it’s flawless. A/A+

IMAG0581

Central Water Fourteen: Don’t remember this one much. Whoops.

IMAG0582

Alpine Duet: Love this palate cleanser!

IMAG0583

Don’t remember this one either. My memory was lost along with that sailor.

IMAG0585

De Garde Lee Noir: Fantastic Flanders beer. Sooo good. A

IMAG0586

This tastes just like Maybelle. Mmmmm

IMAG0588

Commons Eidolon: Maybe this beer isn’t fading after all…this bottle was completely different than the beer when it was fresh, but it was very nice. A-

IMAG0589

Hill Farmstead Convivial Suarez: Delicious as always! A-/A

IMAG0590

Russian River Framboise for a Cure: Very good framboise, might benefit from a bit of age though. A-

IMAG0591

Toppling Goliath X-Hops: Really tasty…but I may have just been desperate for hoppy beer by this point.

IMAG0592

Cigar City Big Sound: CCB does stout right.

Nice Change

It’s been a while since I opened a bottle of stout and finished it myself. I feel like a big boy, no longer drinking 2 oz. pours of beer!

IMAG2677

Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout: Better than the last time I had it for sure. Not nearly as watery! B/B+
