Eye doctors becoming eye doctors

A friend of mine finally graduated optometry school. Years ago he asked if I would save a beer for his graduation. I did.

Yep, this is gonna be interesting.

Look at him, probably checking into beer with the same fervor that an 18 year old swipes on tinder.

Oh that sinking feeling.

This is how it’s done.

God this was the worst beer of the night

These were very tasty too.

Best beers of the evening. Armand & Tommy still not as good as the Seasons if you ask me.

and goodnight fellas!

Goodbye Beers

Sadly said goodbye to some friends who moved back to Boston the other day. Since they are both beer geeks we did the whole bottle share thingy before hitting a few bars.

20161006_211755

Yeah, this beer is weird. Not recommended.

20161014_233143

Holy Mountain Guava Table: Smells like poop, tastes amazing. Like funky guava juice. I need to go and get some of that Hawaiian guava juice sometime.

20161014_225146

Fucking mead.

20161014_223259

Yep, the blend of Broken Truck No. 2 and Leaner is greater than the sum of their parts. Look at the girl in the background dance because it’s so good. She can barely contain herself! ALL IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE!

20161014_221826

Leaner is pretty good on it’s own too.

20161014_222017

Meanwhile….someone didn’t want to hang out with us.

20161014_210936

Cigar City Marshal Zhukov: God this stuff is good. They should barrel age all of it.

20161014_213722

Goose Island Proprietors 2014: Don’t mind the judging lady in the background. She’s just hating. This beer is incredible now, with the cinnamon nicely integrated into the bourbon character of the base beer. I don’t know how much longer this beer can age, but if you have one, drink it now!

20161013_222135

Why good morning to you back! Mmmmmmmm

20161013_220621

I honestly can’t remember what this one was like….sorry.

20161013_215605

Cellarmaker The Glow: Baby Hill Farmstead Abner?!

20161013_205553

Sante Adairius Saison Bernice: well this beer is just terrible, which is why I drink it all the time.

20161013_204348

Yeah….don’t remember this one either.

Steak and Beer for Days

Seriously, leftovers for days.

Ribeyes, culotte, bavette, flat iron, and some cold smoked and brined pork chops. 9.2 lbs.

Then….we drank enough beer to crush us all.

 IMAG2170

Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze: This 2015 bottle is pretty good, shows a lot of promise in a few years.

IMAG2169

Upright Fatali Four: Getting spicier, I’m digging it.

IMAG2178

Hill Farmstead Susan: This beer is really good, definitely one of my favorite Hill Farmsteads that you can only get in growlers.

IMAG2177

Casey Peach Fruit Stand: Best fruit stand yet, this one actually has enough peach flavor to stand up to the fruit bombs that are de Garde.

IMAG2176

Hill Farmstead Florence: I’m normally not that into this one compared to other Hill Farmstead beers, but this batch is fantastic. Really reminds me of old batches of Arthur.

IMAG2175

Hill Farmstead Earl: The oatmeal really improves the mouthfeel on this beer, but there just isn’t enough coffee here. Next time, aeropress.

IMAG2173

Hill Farmstead Everett: Yep, still the best porter around!

IMAG2172

Upright Hearts’ Beat: Very tasty, but it needs time to funk up in my opinion. It’s just too sweet right now.

IMAG2186

de Garde Imperial Blu Bu: Mmmmmmmmmm, cow farts.

IMAG2185

de Garde Blu Bu Weisse: Old de Garde walez anyone? This beer is absolutely fantastic, but the real value here is the novelty of having one of the first beers that de Garde ever made, and if I remember correctly, this was the only beer that de Garde made that used fresh fruit that they picked themselves.

IMAG2184

Sante Adairius Appreciation: Better now than the last time I had it, the berry flavors that were not very distinct before have definitely transitioned into a clearly boysenberry taste. It’s great. This is about the time where my palate ran off and died in the woods.

IMAG2183

Cigar City Hunahpu’s: Definitely better fresh than aged, drink em now folks. No one is going to want to trade for your regular ass hunahpu’s when it’s two years old.

IMAG2182

The Alchemist Focal Banger: Almost as good as Heady Topper, I think the last time I had this beer was when it was still being sold in a plain ass can with a dumb sticker that would fall off if the can got wet. Big problem when condensation forms on the can the moment you remove it from the fridge!

IMAG2181

Alesmith Hammerhead Speedway w/ Vanilla Beans: Okay, Alesmith didn’t add the vanilla beans, but they should. The espresso in this beer and the bitterness that comes along with it really stands up to the addition of vanilla. I think this is even better than putting vanilla beans into BCBS. Srsly.

IMAG2180

Hill Farmstead Shirley Mae: Yeah, really wasn’t expecting this to be a porter (clearly didn’t read the fine print), but after having Everett I’m broken.

IMAG2191

de Garde The Broken Truck: Oh, hey there batch 1 The Broken Truck. You taste amazing, but I’m really, really drunk. It has flavor. hnngh.

IMAG2190

de Garde The Anniversary: Yep, still drunk.

IMAG2189

de Garde Biere Rose: Wow, this beer actually aged well! I drank all mine thinking that it was amazing fresh and didn’t show much promise in the long run. I’m a dummy.

IMAG2188

de Garde Biere Violet: TASTE LIKE BERRIES AND THANGS.

IMAG2187

Uhhhh, I barely remember this one. I assume it was good!

Brews for New Avenues Bottle Share

New Avenues for Youth had a small bottle share at one of my favorite bars over the weekend, just to get some donor engagement going, and since we all drink and hang out together anyway.

IMAG1517

First, had to stretch the liver with some Hawaiian Speedway. It was taaaaassty.

IMAG1518

Thanks for the spread Cheese Bar!

Pre-Block 15 Release

Well we were supposed to play Settlers of Catan, but instead we watched climbing videos. Of course we watched climbing videos.

IMAG1426

de Garde Nelson Hose: Still very tasty, but the hops are fading. People should really drink these fresh.

IMAG1427

Barley Browns Pallet Jack: One of the best IPAs out there in my opinion, and those crowlers are sneaking into every facet of my life.

IMAG1428

Cigar City Jose Marti: 4 year old barrel aged porter? It’s actually really tasty! Surprised I haven’t heard about this beer before.

IMAG1429

Oskar Blues BA Ten Fidy: My last can, and it’s better than bourbon county…….:(

IMAG1430

We had to do the comparison, and Bourbon County just comes across as overly sweet next to BA Ten Fidy.

IMAG1431

Sante Adairius Joey F***ing Pepper: It’s no Fatali Four, but this beer is very, very tasty. I wouldn’t mind more peppercorns in this beer though.

IMAG1434

Upright Brewing BA Flora: One of the best saisons out there. It’s not super aggressive in any aspect, but it has a fantastic nose and so much subtlety and nuance.

IMAG1435

This wasn’t that good.

IMAG1436

This one was. Vanilla milkshakes!

Just a few beers they said, take it easy they said.

What a bunch of god. damn. liars.

DSC_0016

Other Half Brewing All Green Everything: Because starting a night with a huge triple IPA can only lead to good things. As a side note, this was really damn good.

DSC_0017

Other Half Brewing Citra: After AGE, this kind of tasted like hoppy water. Delicious, hoppy water.

DSC_0018

Jester King something with sweet potatoes, coconut, and chili peppers: Thank god you couldn’t taste those added ingredients, because then the beer would have been terrible. Thank you universe for rejecting their experiments, thank you.

DSC_0019

Alpine Kiwi Herman: TASTES LIKE ALCOHOLIC SMARTIES. Childhood comes rushing back.

DSC_0020

Cigar City Hunahpu’s: This is probably the smoothest year so far. Might not be as spicy as Mexican Cake or Abraxxas, but has the best balance of spice, cinnamon, and chocolate.

DSC_0021

Cigar City California Brandy Hunahpu’s: This beer has faded a bunch, to the point where it wasn’t actually an improvement over the fresher Hunahpu’s we had.

DSC_0022

Tired Hands Parasomething something: It has a flavor, it was pretty good.

DSC_0023

de Garde Apricot Bu: Yep, still a metric fuckload of fruit. Also, quite sour, but that’s okay, since I’m far beyond the point of palate fatigue.

DSC_0024

Upright shelf turds can be pretty good I guess.

DSC_0025

GOTTA BUST OUT THAT SPECIAL HERBS! So good it blew my camera out of focus with its pure awesomeness. Believe it.

DSC_0026

Green Man Bootsy: Beer was really sour, but that label art.

DSC_0027

de Garde Currant Gin Bu: Probably still my favorite regular Bu from de Garde. So good and balanced, and there’s nothing else like it.

Too tired to keep going, it was 4AM and my body told me to go fuck off.

Dangerous Times

IMAG0505

Yeah, this is a growler of Ballast Point’s Heaven Hill Barrel-Aged Victory At Sea. God that was a long name, but befitting to a beer that absolutely crushed my liver with its delicious rye, bourbon, chocolate, and tobacco notes. Easily better than BCBS.

IMAG0507 IMAG0510

Now that I’m drunk, might as well drink some more. Cafe Americano was terrible compared to the Victory at Sea, and Cantillon is always delicious. Always.

De Garde 2nd Anniversary

Saturday was De Garde’s 2nd Anniversary party, and it was really well run, but there was some more douchebaggery than normal as pretentious beer geeks from out of town had to pontificate on the rawrness of their beers.

IMAG0164

De Garde Beaucoup Violet: Jammy jammm jamm.

Tasting at Growler Guys

My liver was not in the greatest shape last Sunday, and there was a bottle share that afternoon. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and rally. This was one of those days.

IMAG3549

Notice the baby pours. The brain is strong, but the liver is weak and tender.

IMAG3550

Hill Farmstead Madness and Civilization #1: Super roasty and delicious. A long time ago we went through the Madness and Civilization set, and #1 was the tastiest. Fast forward half a year or so, and the beer is still fantastic.

IMAG3551

10 Barrel Cucumber Crush: Okay, this feels much better.

IMAG3552

Cigar City Double Barrel Hunahpu’s: Look at the upper left corner. His expression basically tells you how good the beer is. That is all.

IMAG3553

Hill Farmstead Norma: Really delicious, but it’s such a pain in the butt to trade for now! BAH VERMONT HOARDERS!!!!

IMAG3554

Westbrook Tequila Barrel Mexican Cake: This is the best use for tequila. It’s a terrible liquid but it isn’t so bad once it’s used to age beer! Yay beer!

IMAG3555

De Garde Imperial Blackberry Bu: Very tasty, but this bottle gushes. Beware.

IMAG3556

Toppling Goliath Assassin: This is much better than the last time I tried it. I did try batch 1 the first time, so it might just be a difference in batches. Anyways, this beer is great and is very tasty. That being said, don’t get raped on the beer forums in order to get one.

IMAG3560

Again, upper left for beer rating.

IMAG3561

DUCK DUCK GOOZE!

IMAG3562

15-hit combo.

Bottle Share @ Growler Guys: The massacre of livers.

Growler Guys hosted a large bottle share for a bunch of the beer geeks in Portland. We all decided to bring beers that we wanted to share with people/couldn’t finish on our own.

So everyone brought big imperial stouts.

IMAG2894

I thought it would be funny to bring a carbonated Hair of the Dog beer. SodaStream works, every time. In this particular case, Adam from the Wood

IMAG2895

10 Barrel Cucumber Crush: This beer is perfect for getting ready. I fucking love this shit. A+

IMAG2896

Hill Farmstead Arthur: Mmmm, this is not an imperial stout, I’m just not quite ready yet. A

IMAG2897

Cantillon Fou Foune 2014: This is superior to the 2013 vintage. Way more apricots in this one. Thanks to my buddy Bruce for bringing this one! A+

IMAG2898

Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek 2014 Cork : Bruce strikes again. Not quite sure that this is as good as the 2013 I opened a few weeks ago, but whatever, it’s all delicious. A+

IMAG2901

That Bruce guy is such an asshole.

IMAG2900

Block 15 Super Nebula: Mmm, this one is the batch that was aged in Pappy Van Winkle 20 barrels. Can you taste the /rar?! A

IMAG2902

Cigar City Marshal Zhukov B1: This beer is 6 years old…..and it’s aged surprisingly well! I imagined an oxidized mess, but it turned out to be pretty good. On the other hand, you should drink this one fresh. B

IMAG2903

Jester King Atrial Rubicite: Best beer that Jester King makes by a mile. Do you like raspberry jam? I do, so I love this beer. A

IMAG2904

Hangar 24 Pugachev’s Cobra: Let the stouts begin.

IMAG2905

Alesmith Vietnamese Coffee Speedway: This is the best variant. So ridiculously good. A+

IMAG2908

Alesmith Kopi Luwak Barrel Aged Speedway: Such a long name, but it’s really damn good. A/A+

IMAG2906

Hill Farmstead E.: NOT A STOUT THANK GOD! I’ve had too many stouts in the last week or so…

IMAG2911

Side Project Saison de Rouge: This one is really good, definitely better than the other Side Projects I’ve had aside from Fuzzy.

IMAG2912

Bruery Chocolate Rain: This is not the beer to have last, but we did it anyway.

So, these are just some of the bottles that showed up at the tasting. If I had to guess, I would say about 50-60 bottles were there, but I’d rather not die, so I only had the ones I listed above.
