Commons V3.0

Commons opened up their brand new space on Friday, the 28th, but I was still in Colorado, so I did my best and visited the day after. But first, I dropped into Upright for their 6th Anniversary.

Mmmm, the 6th Anniversary blend is basically the same beer as the 5th Anniversary, with some minor tweaks. It’s very good, better than 5th Anniversary was when it first came out.

Regardless of the status of their membership program, this strawberry lemonade berliner is pretty good.

The old 7-barrel system that Commons used to use will be now used for R&D batches.

Citrus Myrtle: Very tasty and refreshing, bring summer on. Can’t wait to crush this crisp, lightly tart and fruity beer in 80+ degree weather.

Commons Buckwheat Grissette: This was also very tasty. Commons might be the new go-to beer for me for drinking outside.

Part 2 of the celebration!

Commons had another celebration….because one simply isn’t enough. I think that’s absolutely fair.

Oh man, girls be scary. Going to drink De Garde Ortucky Common instead, because this one is nice and approachable.

Whatevers, time to get another glass of Gin Enkel, because it’s amazing, and because they served it to me in a glass that had a pac-man made of cheese on the side of it.

This photo of Braam was dangerous, someone almost knocked it off the bar immediately after this photo was taken. If the beer was actually lost, there would be a photo below of the broken glass, followed by a separate photo of a dead, neck bearded beer geek.

Luckily, that didn’t happen. Drank some Mainer Weisse instead. Holy shit this beer was aggressive, I could not finish more than one of those taster glasses, but it tasted great!

Finally 100% Recovered

As all beer geeks probably know by now, this last Saturday was Hair of the Dog’s 20th Anniversary. People flew in from all over the country to attend the event, including 3 friends from Arizona. Since they got in on the Thursday before the event, we decided to have a little bottle share at my friend’s house the night before that anniversary party. It’s safe to say that things got pretty serious.

Red Swingline: Interesting wild IPA, kind of reminds me of De Garde’s Spears. B

Bruery Beauregarde: Makes me want De Garde Blu Bu Weisse, but still pretty solid. B

Hill Farmstead Flora: Oh this beer is incredible. Probably #2 of the night! So delicious and sour with nice citrus notes. Better than Mimosa in my opinion. A+

Hill Farmstead Flora with Satsuma: Really, really good, but not nearly as good as regular Flora. A

Drie Fonteinen Blauw: Holy shitballs amazing holywtfbbqsauce one of the best sours evar. A+

Russian River T25: Really tasty beer, but I don’t think it’s a whole lot better than Consecration. A

Cigar City California Brandy Hunahpu’s: Really amazing, almost as good as the apple brandy variant. A/A+

Alpine Chez Monus: Even more citrus than Flora, but without the same level of tartness. Really fantastic though. A+

Brews for New Avenues VIP Tasting

As a thank you to those who bought VIP tickets, Brews for New Avenues and Commons Brewing hosted a bottle share. It was really nice to see so many familiar faces while trying a bunch of different beers.

Commons Eidolon: I’ve had a bottle that wasn’t that great, but this bottle has aged quite nicely. It is definitely more tart and funky than before, but the tea that was used to make this beer has really come through on the back end. Glad I downed the whole bottle solo. A-

Yeah, decided to eat some banh mi, have a beer on draft, and share a bottle with people at the Commons.

Commons Fruit Beer Fest Entry: This beer is fantastically tart. And it’s pink. A-

Captain Lawrence Rosse e Marrone: Soooo much better than the last batch (that beer was a complete turd). This bottle was not very tart, but had a great barrel character with a bucket load of grape skins. Very pleasant, would drink again! A-

Commons attempt at a hoppy berlinerweisse. Solid. (Edit: Not actually a berliner, but that’s what it made me think of)

Bright, sunny, and warm. So of course I didn’t go outside…I hit up breweries instead.

Gueuze and Oysters

Yeah, weird pairing right? But this pairing is absolutely genius! I’m going to have to do this on my own in the future. Oysters…good….gueuze…good…..add them together and you could break the space-time continuum.

Cantillon Lou Pepe Gueuze 2008: First time having LP Gueuze, and it’s really, really good. Turns out it’d be one of the best beers of the night! A+

Armand ‘4 Herfst: Looks like this beer gets to make another appearance, and it’s still just as good as I remember. Might be the best beer of the night. A+

Block 15 Golden Canary 2011: Really tasty, but doesn’t quite hold up against the competition so far. It’s sweeter than I remember, but I don’t think I’ve had the 2011 batch before. A-

Commons Maybelle: Solid, but this time it just tasted like water. The other beers were far to aggressively sour and funky.

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze: One of my biggest wants, and I finally got to try it. This beer is SOUR. Just smelling it makes me involuntarily pucker up. Not so much funk, but I can’t really tell because I’m still crying from the sourness. Awesome beer. A+

We also did a blind tasting between 2 boons, beatification, oude gueze, classic gueuze, and tilquin. My ranking was in order of best to worst: Beatification, oude gueze, tilquin, classic gueuze, and then the two boons.

Total rankings were: Beatification, tilquin, oude gueze, classic gueuze, and then the two boons.

Alpine Pure Hoppiness: Stupid good. The hoppiness was a fantastic break from the sour onslaught. A-
