Wrapping Up Indiana Jones

Finished the Last Crusade the evening after starting it. Tonight’s theme was Upright beer. So pathetic right?

dsc_20091 dsc_20101

Upright Flora 2014 & 2016: So just like de Garde, the older beer is tastier, but they have transformed into completely different beasts. The wine finishing and brett character in the older beer is world class, while the new batch is spicy and bone dry. A+ for 2014, A for 2016. Drink this shit, it’s delicious.

Upright 6th Anniversary Saison: Yep, another incredible beer from Upright. I think I’ve started trading for less Hill Farmstead saisons recently because I have a brewery that produces saisons that are just as good and I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for shipping. God I need to start hoarding these.

New batch of Upright Flora is very tasty. A-

Timbers win the MLS championship! Also known as the day my liver died.

IMAG1540 IMAG1541 IMG_2522

Yep, celebration beer! 6L St. Bernardus Abt 12, there was also a 3L Chimay Blue floating around somewhere….Doesn’t matter, it could have been horse piss and I still would have been happy. WE FUCKING WON THE CUP!

But that’s not all. We had to do this in classic beer geek fashion, by opening all the beer.

IMAG1542

Dangerously tasty and light for 10.4%…..this must be a sign of things to come.

IMAG1543

Cloudberry lambic? Yep, I’ll take one of those please.

IMAG1544

Let’s just cradle all the things, because no fucks are given.

IMAG1545

Ah, the classic standby

IMAG1546

Wut, getting really eccentric with this beer right here. Brekeriet Rye Whiskey Sour. It was really good, reminded me of the peated lambic from h.ertie.

IMAG1547

Just a summary of things that have happened.

IMAG1548

BABY CRADLE! Also, did not read this Walt Whitman book.

IMAG1549

Regular BCBS infused with coffee or legit BCBCS? BCBS, almost unanimously.

IMAG1550

Something lambic cherries.

IMAG1551

Batch 5 Flora, absolutely killing it right now. I should have drank more of that fizzy water in the upper left hand corner. Things are getting kind of grey around the edges.

IMAG1552

So I’ll just keep going, I like the slow increase in the number of glasses hanging out on the table.

IMAG1553

Not sure when I migrated over to the coffee table….but the beer was still good.

IMAG1554

Oh, much better. SNACKS HAVE APPEARED

We also opened these, and a few other beers that I forgot to photograph…..like the most important ones. Whoops!

Final damage, my cat did not approve of our antics.

An excuse to drink? Okay!

My friend is getting married soon, and most of his friends aren’t beer geeks/kind of suck, so we drank without them 🙂

IMAG0210

Hill Farmstead Brother Soigne b1: So this beer is a couple years old now, and it’s the best bottle I’ve ever had. As much as I like Brother Soigne fresh, it might just be better with more age to it. More tart, and more lingering sweetness on the end, with some nicely developed funk as well. A+

IMAG0211

We may have played this Neutral Milk Hotel song a few times while drinking this beer.

IMAG0212

Cantillon 5oN4E: This beer is aging really well too. Nice cantillon classic gueuze flavors up front, with some really delicate barrel and sweetness on the finish. One of the more nuanced beers from Cantillon that I’ve had. One thing to note though, carbonation was pretty low on my bottle, but I’ve experienced more carbonation in other bottles in the past. Good thing the carbonation level didn’t bother me at all! A+

IMAG0213

De Garde Petit Lee: Insert joke about how I’m a short Asian here.

IMAG0214

Block 15 Sticky Hands: Great beer as always, and as always I’m still waiting for Sticky Cans.

IMAG0215

Hill Farmstead Flora b5: My favorite batch of Flora, but as Flora tends to fall off as it gets older, I better start drinking my bottles quickly! This bottle was still great, and would have been the best beer of the night if 50N4E wasn’t there to rain on its parade! A+

IMAG0216

Why do we always open high ABV beers towards the end?! WHY?!!!!!

IMAG0217

De Garde Citra Hose: This beer tastes like mangosteens. WHICH IS AMAZING.

IMAG0218

FUUUUUUUCK. Marshmallows.

IMAG0220

De Garde Cherry Rum Bu: I had this beer when it first came out, and there was no rum to be found. However, I’m happy to say that a year later there is rum! A gentle rum-flavored sweetness is hanging out on the finish of this beer. This beer matched our unnaturally warm weather really well. A

Whale Slaying

Saturday was De Garde’s 2nd Anniversary, and a bunch of people flew in from out of town, including some of our friends! So a we call got together to drink some beer. There was some really rare beer thrown in, just for kicks, and to make the time more memorable!

IMAG0138

Hill Farmstead Flora: Might be the best beer that Hill Farmstead makes, and it was tastier than some of the other wine barrel aged saisons we had that night. A

IMAG0140

Casey East Bank: Another very tasty beer, with some nice funk and lemon zest thrown in. I would love to see this beer with some fruit, or gin barrels though. B+

IMAG0141

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze: Still the best beer label in existence, and the beer itself is really good too! It is starting to get more sour though, so maybe drink this one sooner rather than later, unless you like dissolving your teeth! B+

IMAG0142

No idea, but it tastes kind of like Hunahpu.

IMAG0143

Upright Noel: Handwritten sole comp beers are always incredibly good. This is no exception!

IMAG0145

New Belgium La Folie 2007: I’ve only had the pleasure of having a caged and corked La Folie once before, and it was fucking wonderful. This beer was incredible, very tart up front, but a nice complex and earthy finish. A+

IMAG0146

New Belgium La Folie 2008: So, looks like I get to have caged and corked La Folie twice in the same night! This year is slightly better, but both are incredible. Someone at New Belgium needs to realize that they’ve made a terrible mistake in pasteurizing this beer. LET IT LIVE. A+

IMAG0148

Hill Farmstead Ann batch 1: Yeah, so this beer is really old now (at least in terms of HF beers), and it shows. While it was really good, I think Brother Soigne is better then this bottle of Ann, and Flora absolutely crushes it. B+

IMAG0147

Hill Farmstead Ann batch 2: Okay, this fresh bottle is waaaaay better than batch 1. I can kind of see the hype now, but I still think Flora is better. One thing about this beer that’s really impressive though is the super soft mouthfeel. A/A+

IMAG0150

Southampton Black Raspberry Lambic: I honestly never thought I would have this beer again, but my friend from Seattle brought this one and surprised the hell out of me. Still super fucking good. Just as fruity as some of De Garde’s but has more back end funkiness. I can’t believe how well this beer is holding up. Might be better than Cable Car Kriek…..A+

IMAG0151

Goose Island Nuthulu: Ahhh, the best beer that Goose Island has made since Bourbon County Vanilla. Lots of vanilla here, but not cloying at all, with some nice nuttiness at the finish. Top 5 stouts of all time if you ask me. A+

IMAG0152

Crooked Stave Persica batch 1: Another American sour that has aged super well. The peach presence here is great, there is more peach in this beer after 3 years than a lot of peach sours have when they are first released. A+

IMAG0149

Another bottle of Flora, just because.

IMAG0154

Drie Fonteinen Armand ‘4 Zomer: As delicious as the beers were thus far, this is probably a top 3 beer of the night for me. You simply don’t get much better than the Seasons if you want to talk about sour beer. A+

IMAG0155

Toppling Goliath SR-71: Tasty, but still not as good as Assassin. Too much barrel, pour some Nuthulu into it and we’ll be in good shape! B+/A-

IMAG0156

Lost Abbey Cable Car: Been a while since I last had this beer, and it is way more sour than I remember. A

IMAG0158

Goose Island Bourbon County Bramble Rye: This beer continues to improve with age, just because I don’t really like fruit in my stouts I think. Kill all the fruited stouts! A

IMAG0160

Goose Island Proprietors 2014: Cinnamon Bourbon County wooOOO!

IMAG0161

WHY DO MY TASTE BUDS NOT WORK?!

IMAG0162

STILL DOESN”T WORK.

IMAG0163

Palate is broken. I give up.

CAMPO IS BACK. COMMENCE DRINKING!

This is stuff from Monday, but my liver was mostly recovering for the past week so I obviously couldn’t finish posting everything. Sorry I’m not sorry.

First stop, wine tasting!

IMAG2165 IMAG2166

And now…. beer!

IMAG2167

Drie Fonteinen Hommage: Better than any fruited Cantillon I’ve ever had. It’s still a little on the sweet side, but after some cellaring the funk is going to match the sweetness and then it will be perfection! A+

IMAG2168

Hill Farmstead Flora: I think this is the best Hill Farmstead beer around! Tart, with a dry and vinous finish! A+

IMAG2169

Hair of the Dog Matt: Dessert in a bottle. Sweet, sticky, with tons of apple and a bit of smoke. A+

IMAG2170

Hill Farmstead Brother Soigne: hnnngh. A+

IMAG2171

How many glasses can my friend’s girlfriend handle? Many.

IMAG2172

De Garde Blackberry Bu: Best of the regular Bu by a mile! So jammy and tart, with huge blackberry notes. A+

IMAG2173

Yeah……Campo tried Winter last time, so we had to open another season. HERFST!!!!!

Finally 100% Recovered

As all beer geeks probably know by now, this last Saturday was Hair of the Dog’s 20th Anniversary. People flew in from all over the country to attend the event, including 3 friends from Arizona. Since they got in on the Thursday before the event, we decided to have a little bottle share at my friend’s house the night before that anniversary party. It’s safe to say that things got pretty serious.

IMAG0050

Red Swingline: Interesting wild IPA, kind of reminds me of De Garde’s Spears. B

IMAG0052

Bruery Beauregarde: Makes me want De Garde Blu Bu Weisse, but still pretty solid. B

IMAG0053

THIS BEER HAS NO SOUL.

IMAG0054

Commons Maybelle: Still aging great! Not much sulfur in this bottle either. A-/A

IMAG0055

Indeed some shit I don’t care to read: Solid black IPA. B

IMAG0056

Hill Farmstead Damon 2011: Really good, but I think it’s fallen off a bit since I opened a bottle last December. A-/A

IMAG0057

Hill Farmstead Damon 2013: This is more like it. MORE BARREL PLEASE! A

IMAG0059

Hill Farmstead Double Barrel Damon: GRANTED. I wish it had bubbles… A/A+

IMAG0060

Crooked Stave Wild Wild Brett Batch 1: This beer is SOUR. I like it. A

IMAG0061

This looks bad, because it is. These are all the beers that contain De Struise Black Albert. Livers are going to bleed everywhere. Well….livers’ aren’t going to kill themselves.

IMAG0064 IMAG0062

De Struise Nuptials: Do not want. Tastes like burning.

IMAG0066

De Struise Blackberry Albert: NOOOOOOOOOOOO

IMAG0066_1

De Struise Black Damnation: Hnnnnnnngggggggghhh.

IMAG0068

Three Floyds Murda’d Out Stout: Hnn….wait, this is actually really good! A/A+ WOOOOO

IMAG0069

De Struise Double Black: WHHHHHHYYYYYYYY?!

IMAG0070

Block 15 Sticky Hands: Oh that god that’s over. Gimme dem hops.

IMAG0071

Hill Farmstead Flora: Oh this beer is incredible. Probably #2 of the night! So delicious and sour with nice citrus notes. Better than Mimosa in my opinion. A+

IMAG0072

Hill Farmstead Flora with Satsuma: Really, really good, but not nearly as good as regular Flora. A

IMAG0073

Drie Fonteinen Blauw: Holy shitballs amazing holywtfbbqsauce one of the best sours evar. A+

IMAG0074

Russian River T25: Really tasty beer, but I don’t think it’s a whole lot better than Consecration. A

IMAG0075

Cigar City California Brandy Hunahpu’s: Really amazing, almost as good as the apple brandy variant. A/A+

IMAG0076

Dunno what this is.

IMAG0077

Alpine Chez Monus: Even more citrus than Flora, but without the same level of tartness. Really fantastic though. A+

IMAG0078

Alesmith Barrel Aged Kopi Speedway: Delicious as always, love weasel poop. A

IMAG0079

Upright Blend Edmunds: Love the jammy goodness. A

IMAG0081

SNR 2010: Really tasty, glad to try this one. A-

IMAG0082

Upright Fantasia Five: Doing quite nicely, surprised I can still tasty peach in this one. B

IMAG0083

Cantillon Vigneronne: This beer is definitely growing on me. A

IMAG0084

Upright Yusef Lateef: Really fading here. Sad. B-

IMAG0086

Stone Punishment: Really pushing here. Absolutely ruined. A

IMAG0087

De Garde Cran Bu Weisse: Great beer, despite not liking cranberries. A/A+

Final damage.
