That was the warm up.

God, so after all that drinking, I have to get up and do it all over again. This time though, stakes are considerably higher, as tonight is whale-slaying night.

IMAG1237

Deschutes Fresh Hop City: Okay, gotta get that blood flowing for some serious liver punishment that is soon to follow. Good beer though, light and very hoppy and floral with minimal bitterness.

IMAG1238 IMAG1239

Oh, well look at that.

IMAG1240

Grote Dorst van ‘t Kasteel: So this beer was blended at Castle Neufcour in Eizeringen in 2010, and is a blend of 17 different lambics. Barely carbonated, this beer is still one of the best lambics that I have ever put into my mouth. This beer probably has the best lemon zest/citrus flavor I’m come across in a lambic, but lacks a little on the back end, where that horse blanket/wet sock funk was nowhere to be found. Oh well, still fucking amazing. Best beer of the night! A+

IMAG1242

WTF KIND OF BASKET IS THAT?! Well, it’s a ghetto ass basket that can house a magnum-sized whale.

IMAG1243

Basket was too flimsy to hold, so we had to dispense it in “water cooler almost empty” fashion.

IMAG1244

Grote Dorst Oude Geuze 2008: Apparently one of only 20 or so magnums, this beer recently sold at auction for lots of money. Unfortunately, this beer is not nearly as good as the 2010 bottle we had just opened. On the other hand, still a pretty good beer. Also, the experience of using that basket was kind of awesome. B+/A-

IMAG1246

Upright 1st Anniversary: God I love old Upright beer. This beer was aged in gin barrels and if anything that gin characteristic has only gotten stronger, aka better. A+

IMAG1249

Don’t mind him, he has serious business to attend to.

IMAG1250

New Belgium La Folie 2009 (cage and corked): God, the caged and corked La Folie’s are always stupendous, it’s a shame they stopped making them. This particular bottle had a ton of cherry presence, even more so than some krieks I’ve had. Had a nice mushroom character too, which can only be found in a few beers, including old lambic and the cage and corked la folies. A+

IMAG1252

Uhhhhh, don’t remember what this one was like.

IMAG1253

Uli/h.ertie Lambik Meets Orval: This particular blend used Drie Fonteinen as the lambic that was blended with Orval. Really tasty, but was a little on the thin side. I expected more Orval flavors in the beer than I actually got. Maybe I had too much palate fatigue? A-

IMAG1254

Yep, we got to use that basket one more time, this time for a 3L of de Garde Imperial Black Raz Bu. Life is hard.

IMAG1255

Deschutes Abyss 2007: Another fantastic beer, and it’s been years since I last had a 2007 Abyss. What a treat! I still think 2010 is better. A+

IMAG1256

Toppling Goliath Morning Delight: Well fuck me, my favorite non-barrel aged stout has decided to show itself. Absurdly tasty, with chocolate, maple syrup, and cinnamon as you slowly drink this beer and relish in its minute-long finish. A+

IMAG1258

Goose Island King Henry: This is much better than the last bottle that I tried, so there is still tons of bottle variation, and there are still some great examples of this beer out there. A+

My poor, poor liver.

I love my lambic

I really really do.

Birthday Time

My climbing buddy celebrated his birthday over the weekend, and since he’s also a big beer geek, we did a little tasting while enjoying some BBQ.

IMAG2398

Uli Blend! This was the Calvados lambic, and it was the best beer of the day. So delicious and funky. A+

IMAG2399

Lost Abbey Cable Car: After trying the Uli, this beer really doesn’t have much funk to it by comparision, and is much sweeter. Still delicious, but I think I may have started trying bottles in the wrong order…A

IMAG2400

De Garde Cherry Rum Bu: This is one of the newest Keeper’s beers, and it’s really good. I can’t say there is really any rum barrel to be found here, but the sweet cherries have dampened the sour levels on the base beer, making much more delicate than the other bu’s. A

IMAG2402

De Garde Blu Bu: 3L bottle is big…

IMAG2404

Bruery Winefication: Please give me the Syrah and the Black Tuesday separately please. The combination really isn’t doing anything good here. I like this beer, but the result is less than the sum of its parts. B+

IMAG2405

Russian River T25: Just cause.

IMAG2406

Gotta blend the two big bottles together. Turned out just like Winefication! Don’t blend these.

IMAG2408

I don’t even know why this was here.

Epic Tasting is Epic

A beer geek from California came up and wanted to do a tasting with us. All stops were removed.

IMAG2055

Small Warmup!

IMAG2056IMAG2057

Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze 2001: This is the oldest Drie Fonteinen beer I’ve had to date, and it tastes like it. Sourness is not as intense as I expected, but carbonation, funk (cheese rind, grass, mushrooms), dryness, and lingering finish were all there. I’d trade some stupid stuff for more of this. A++

IMAG2058

Drie Fonteinen Armand ‘4 Herfst: Okay, so this is actually better than the 2001 Oude Geuze….So minerality, much delicious. A++

IMAG2059

H.ertie Wijingaardperziken: Uli Peach Lambic in laymans terms. It’s also fucking delicious, most likely the best peach sour I’ve ever had. Tastes like lambic paired with fresh peach cobbler. Absolutely floored by this one. Probably the best beer of the night. A++

IMAG2060

H.ertie Crazy Birthday Beer 2010: Sour and boozy. Lambic meets Scotch, and I like it! A

IMAG2061

Cantillon Iris 2013: Delicious, with a dry hoppiness before you get hit with the sour and the funk. Unfortunately, this just can’t keep up with the beers that were opened previously. B+

IMAG2062

Taps Pappy’s Remy: Best stout I’ve had in a long time. Creamy, chocolately, with tons of barrel at the end without much alcohol burn. A+

IMAG2063

Goose Island Cthulu: I really wanted to hate this beer, I really really did. I hate to say it, but this beer is fantastic. Better than Block 15’s Super Nebula even. A+

IMAG2064

Upright Special Herbs: My favorite saison to date I think. So absurdly good!  A+

IMAG2065

Upright Barrel Aged Wit: Worst old sole comp I’ve had, but still pretty solid. Great palate cleanser too! B

IMAG2066

AC Golden Colorambic: Might be the best non-fruited american sour I’ve had. Absolutely crushed Beatification. A

IMAG2068

De Garde The Archer: Yep, one of the best beers that De Garde has made. Grapes are still shining while the tartness has stepped up a notch.

IMAG2069

Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla: Okay, so this is the best stout of the night. A++

IMAG2070

Eh

IMAG2071

Upright Barrel Aged Seven: Yep, this is also delicious.

IMAG2072

Upright De La Seven: The addition of De La Senne yeast is not doing this beer a whole lot of good.

IMAG2074

Hill Farmstead Arthur: My palate is so shot.

IMAG2075

UPRIGHT FUCKING SINGLE CASK SIX WOOOOO!

IMAG2077 IMAG2080 IMAG2079

Look at this crap. It tastes like wisdom.

IMAG2081 IMAG2082

Stragglers. Pretty solid tasting. I’m going to bed now.

Drinking in Cologne

So I’m in China right now, but I got to finish these posts somehow!

Time to bring on a tasting with Uli himself!!!!

IMAG1355

The crazed scientist himself. Note how bright it is outside.

IMAG1356

H.ertie Kickbacks: This beer if freaking amazing. A+

IMAG1359

Not a bad hoppy beer from Europe. They don’t really know how to do these things though.

IMAG1360

Upright Fantasia: Drinking like a peachy champion. However, I still maintain that as good as this beer is, the label is simply awful. A

IMAG1361

Upright Jeux D’eau: Drinking better than before, maybe I shouldn’t have sent out so many bottles to people…A-

IMAG1363

35 year old berliner weisse: no big deal.

IMAG1364

Don’t remember much about this one, other than it being really interesting.

IMAG1365

Beer on left was awful, beer on right was being slowly opened because it’s a gusher

IMAG1366

I was at this for quite some time, but it was worth it.

IMAG1367

Oh yeah, director of brewing operations at Victory Brewing in Philly was with us. Cool dude.

IMAG1369

I like these stainless growlers, and apparently they do counter pressure fills now!

IMAG1371

Hair of the Dog Matt: Yep, we had another one.

IMAG1373

Lost Abbey Veritas 012: I was underwhelmed. Probably because the other beer was so good?

IMAG1374

Nope nope nope. Also, it’s getting pretty late, and I’m feeeeeelin’ it.

IMAG1375

Oh look what I found. OM NOM NOM

Drinking in Antwerp!

We met up with some of Europe’s huge tickers (rate beer thingy) at a bar in Antwerp that was opened just for this tasting. God I feel special.

DSC03652

But first, we had to travel through Brussels. So naturally we went to Cantillon. 50N4E was delicious.

IMAG1242

So much beer on the Thalys high-speed train…

IMAG1270

Yep, bar is shut. Let’s get started.

IMAG1254

Orval Green: I like this more than Orval, much more crushable.

IMAG1257

Block 15 Peche: Yep, still my favorite peach beer. A+

IMAG1258

This pilsner was garbage. D-

IMAG1259

De Garde Loak: Tasty, but it has a weird flavor going on this time, maybe it’s something to do with this particular bottle. B

IMAG1261

Cantillon 50N4E: Yeah, I really have no problems drinking this multiple times in a week. A+

IMAG1263

H.ertie Framfort 8: This is an incredible Uli blend, the best that I’ve ever had. So much sweet raspberry while maintaining funk and sour along with a nice soft finish is pretty miraculous. Might be the best beer of the whole trip. A++

IMAG1264

Goose Island Proprietors: Yeah, this beer is still fucking amazing. Best variant since Vanilla! A+

IMAG1266

Hair of the Dog Matt: Great change of pace from a bunch of sour beer. A+

IMAG1267

Yep, getting drunk!!!!!

Then we went over to Kulminator…and got smashed.

DSC03670

Drie Fonteinen Hommage: FINALLY TICKED THIS FUCKER YEHHHHHHH! It was absolutely amazing. Best fruited beer I’ve had from Drie Fonteinen! A+

Oysters and Geuze: The Sequel

About a year and a half ago, my friend James hosted our tasting group where we paired sour beer (geuze) with oysters on the half shell. It was an incredible pairing, one of the best that I’ve come across. This past weekend we decided to give it another go while watching the Broncos crush the Pats and the Seahawks eke out a win against the 49ers.

GIBCBVS01

This isn’t even all the oysters we had….in total we had about 12 dozen oysters. Varieties were Kumamotos, Barron Points, Chef Creeks, and Breaksides. The Kumamotos were my favorites followed by the Breaksides. The Barron Points were really good too, but they were just enormous oysters.

IMAG0751

Yeah….this was a little intimidating.

IMAG0753

Drie Fonteinen Armand 4 Lente: Best of the Seasons, and in my opinion, the best of the whole day. It tastes deliciously tart and funky, with a really nice grassy and fruity aspect that makes me drool. A+

IMAG0754

Drie Fonteinen Armand 4 Zomer: Not a whole lot different than Lente, but it was slightly watered down by comparison. Still one of the very best geuzes out there. A+

IMAG0755

Drie Fonteinen Armand 4 Herfst: This is probably the most distinctive of the 4 Seasons, with a very distinct mineral quality to it that I really enjoy and thought paired very well with the oysters we were eating. This is my second favorite Season. A+

IMAG0756

Drie Fonteinen Armand 4 Winter: Still amazing, but kind of simplistic compared to the other 4 Seasons. Don’t get me wrong though, you should trade for any and all of these if you have the chance. A+

IMAG0757

Lente, Zomer, Herfst, and Winter. It’s not everyday you can try the whole set in one sitting!

IMAG0758

Drie Fonteinen Armand & Tommy: Very delicious and much tastier than when I had it fresh, but this is just not on the same level as the Seasons. A+

IMAG0759

This felt like a good palate cleanser since it had the same name as our host. It’s a good black IPA to boot too!

IMAG0762

Uli Zomergeuze El Sol: Extremely citrusy and sour, with nice funk character. This is definitely one of the best beers of the day, and probably would have been the best if it wasn’t for the fact that this beer was completely flat. A+

IMAG0763

Russian River Beatification Batch 2: This was not great, definitely over the hill. Just goes to prove that not all “walez” are super tasty anymore. B-/B

IMAG0764

Russian River Beatification Batch 3: This is definitely more like it, very tasty with a big kick of sour to the mouth and a little funk to back it up. I hear it’s peaked though. A

IMAG0765

Russian River Beatification Batch 4: This one isn’t great either…tastes like shock tarts. B

IMAG0766

Russian River Beatification Batch 5: This is the best one by far. Just trade for a ton of Batch 5 everyone! A

IMAG0767

Russian River Beatification Batch 6: This one was watery and not very sour. It needs time. B

IMAG0768

WTF is that?! That’s some serious mold in the cork…on the other hand, it is from 1984…

IMAG0769

1984 Eylenbosch: So this is the oldest beer I’ve ever had….and it was carbonated and very tasty. However, I have a hard time describing this beer, it tastes…..so old. A+

IMAG0770

Oude Beersel 2007: This was good too!

IMAG0771

Fond Gueuze Bierpallieters: This was not good. C

IMAG0772

Cantillon Classic Gueuze 2012: Wow, for the first time in my life can I say that a Cantillon Gueuze acted as a palate cleanser. Extreme palate fatigue is extreme.

IMAG0774

Cantillon Grand Cru Bruocsella: This beer sucked. C-

IMAG0775

Cantillon Saint Lamvinus 2010: Tasted good, smelled like baby diapers. B+

IMAG0776

Cantillon Saint Gilloise: Man my liver and mouth are so tired.

IMAG0778

Cantillon Iris: This was tasty too, but I was seriously struggling at this point. A

IMAG0779

The graveyard.
