Special Herbs

IMAG2790

Upright Special Herbs: This beer came out while I was out of town, so I made sure to pop into the tasting room the moment I got back home. This year’s batch adds a brandy barrel to the mix, and I think it’s a good thing. This beer seems to have a thicker mouthfeel than previous batches, but the spice, fruit, and gin barrel finish are still evident. On the other hand, there is a kind of bready finish that I’m not a huge fan of, but as long as you keep drinking this beer it won’t become and issue. Hopefully this taste isn’t present in bottles and if so, will clean up over time.

The Magic is in the Pozole.

My friend Brian hosted a bunch of us a few days ago and someone brought pozole. Also known as the greatest chili ever. Best part? You can add enough hot chili oil to make you sweat for days. I suffered so good.

We also drank some shit beer.

Upright Special Herbs: Mother. Fucking. HNNNGH.

IMAG1841

de Garde 3S: Drinking some asshat’s special sauce is really starting to grind my gears. ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!

IMAG1840

de Garde Orchard Bu: I LOVE YOUR ORANGE STONE FRUIT GOODNESSSSSSSSSS. It’s like Sunny D for men!!!

Right in the feels.

Just keep drinking, just keep drinking, just keep drinking, drinking drinking!

Just a few beers they said, take it easy they said.

What a bunch of god. damn. liars.

DSC_0016

Other Half Brewing All Green Everything: Because starting a night with a huge triple IPA can only lead to good things. As a side note, this was really damn good.

DSC_0017

Other Half Brewing Citra: After AGE, this kind of tasted like hoppy water. Delicious, hoppy water.

DSC_0018

Jester King something with sweet potatoes, coconut, and chili peppers: Thank god you couldn’t taste those added ingredients, because then the beer would have been terrible. Thank you universe for rejecting their experiments, thank you.

DSC_0019

Alpine Kiwi Herman: TASTES LIKE ALCOHOLIC SMARTIES. Childhood comes rushing back.

DSC_0020

Cigar City Hunahpu’s: This is probably the smoothest year so far. Might not be as spicy as Mexican Cake or Abraxxas, but has the best balance of spice, cinnamon, and chocolate.

DSC_0021

Cigar City California Brandy Hunahpu’s: This beer has faded a bunch, to the point where it wasn’t actually an improvement over the fresher Hunahpu’s we had.

DSC_0022

Tired Hands Parasomething something: It has a flavor, it was pretty good.

DSC_0023

de Garde Apricot Bu: Yep, still a metric fuckload of fruit. Also, quite sour, but that’s okay, since I’m far beyond the point of palate fatigue.

DSC_0024

Upright shelf turds can be pretty good I guess.

DSC_0025

GOTTA BUST OUT THAT SPECIAL HERBS! So good it blew my camera out of focus with its pure awesomeness. Believe it.

DSC_0026

Green Man Bootsy: Beer was really sour, but that label art.

DSC_0027

de Garde Currant Gin Bu: Probably still my favorite regular Bu from de Garde. So good and balanced, and there’s nothing else like it.

Too tired to keep going, it was 4AM and my body told me to go fuck off.

DSC_0028 DSC_0030 DSC_0029

Man I’m tired.

Fuck fatigue, there are more important things to do, like drink craft beer. Let’s just gloss over the fact that I spent the last 25ish hours getting back home from Thailand.

I will say I’m out of practice, drank a Brother Soigne without taking a photo. Bad Sam.

Sante Adairius Bright Sea Blonde: I FUCKING LOVE CRAFT BEER OMGOMGOMG

DRINK IT ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

So overhyped I forgot to post it

That’s right, we drank some Side Project!

DSC_0469

Since we were drinking something that was really overhyped, we had to have something good in case all the other beers sucked.

DSC_0470 DSC_0472 DSC_0471

Blanc de Blanc was the winner by far for me, but everyone else liked Le Fosse more. I just can’t handle that huge acetic punch that Le Fosse shoves into your face at first go.

Punchdown was meh. The others were good, but not worth their trade value, as always.

Mmmm, good way to end a night!

Epic Tasting is Epic

A beer geek from California came up and wanted to do a tasting with us. All stops were removed.

IMAG2055

Small Warmup!

IMAG2056IMAG2057

Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze 2001: This is the oldest Drie Fonteinen beer I’ve had to date, and it tastes like it. Sourness is not as intense as I expected, but carbonation, funk (cheese rind, grass, mushrooms), dryness, and lingering finish were all there. I’d trade some stupid stuff for more of this. A++

IMAG2058

Drie Fonteinen Armand ‘4 Herfst: Okay, so this is actually better than the 2001 Oude Geuze….So minerality, much delicious. A++

IMAG2059

H.ertie Wijingaardperziken: Uli Peach Lambic in laymans terms. It’s also fucking delicious, most likely the best peach sour I’ve ever had. Tastes like lambic paired with fresh peach cobbler. Absolutely floored by this one. Probably the best beer of the night. A++

IMAG2060

H.ertie Crazy Birthday Beer 2010: Sour and boozy. Lambic meets Scotch, and I like it! A

IMAG2061

Cantillon Iris 2013: Delicious, with a dry hoppiness before you get hit with the sour and the funk. Unfortunately, this just can’t keep up with the beers that were opened previously. B+

IMAG2062

Taps Pappy’s Remy: Best stout I’ve had in a long time. Creamy, chocolately, with tons of barrel at the end without much alcohol burn. A+

IMAG2063

Goose Island Cthulu: I really wanted to hate this beer, I really really did. I hate to say it, but this beer is fantastic. Better than Block 15’s Super Nebula even. A+

IMAG2064

Upright Special Herbs: My favorite saison to date I think. So absurdly good!  A+

IMAG2065

Upright Barrel Aged Wit: Worst old sole comp I’ve had, but still pretty solid. Great palate cleanser too! B

IMAG2066

AC Golden Colorambic: Might be the best non-fruited american sour I’ve had. Absolutely crushed Beatification. A

IMAG2068

De Garde The Archer: Yep, one of the best beers that De Garde has made. Grapes are still shining while the tartness has stepped up a notch.

IMAG2069

Goose Island Bourbon County Vanilla: Okay, so this is the best stout of the night. A++

IMAG2070

Eh

IMAG2071

Upright Barrel Aged Seven: Yep, this is also delicious.

IMAG2072

Upright De La Seven: The addition of De La Senne yeast is not doing this beer a whole lot of good.

IMAG2074

Hill Farmstead Arthur: My palate is so shot.

IMAG2075

UPRIGHT FUCKING SINGLE CASK SIX WOOOOO!

IMAG2077 IMAG2080 IMAG2079

Look at this crap. It tastes like wisdom.

IMAG2081 IMAG2082

Stragglers. Pretty solid tasting. I’m going to bed now.
