Breaking in the new island

Got a new kitchen island to replace my shitty IKEA island. Had to christen it properly. These aren’t in any particular order, you’ll survive.

Wicked Weed Genesis: Quite tasty, but I’m really not getting tropical fruits here….more like another version of Russian River Temptation.

4 Hands Brewing Madagascar: I’m sorry to say this, but you were an okay beer, but too much carbonation plus many other tastier beers led you to being dumped into the sink at 3:30AM. Maybe next time we’ll budget livers accordingly. Or not.

Central Waters Cassian Sunset: Uhhhhhhh, it had a thin mouthfeel but smelled awesome. Yes, memory is incredible.

The Rare Barrel Becoming: I really like this beer despite being a small Rare Barrel hater. This beer reminds me of a Sante Adairius beer more than an Rare Barrel one. Praise doesn’t get much higher than that.

Dieu du Ciel! Double Barrel Peche Mortel: HOLY GOD I LOVE THIS BEER. I find it kind of hilarious that it’s hard to find a barrel aged beer these days with only one adjunct. God have mercy on us all.

Hair of the Dog Matt: This 2013 bottle is absolutely singing right now. Tons of apple brandy and the slight oxidation cuts the sweet nature of the beer. I think we opened this at 2AM, so we’re all very smart.

ALL BOW DOWN TO THE KITTEH. Seriously though, Biere Rouge is drinking fantastic right now, and is a great palate cleanser to all the dark beers we had been drinking previously.

Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek: This 2011 (2013 cork date) bottle is picking up an enormous amount of funk. I really like it. Best beer of the night!

de Garde Cherry Raz Bu b2: People were a little slow in arriving, so this beer was used to help stretch out the hammies for those who were already here. Tons of raspberry here, with just a hint of cherries. It’s extremely good despite being a little on the acidic side.

Casey The Low End: Something is a little weird here. It’s not nearly as sour or hoppy as other bottles I have opened. Not sure if this has to do with fresh vs non-fresh, or if this is a bottle variation issue. Still alright though.

Old Soul The Sauce: Soooo, this Sacramento brewery needs to spend less money on packaging and more money on the beer itself. That being said, it reminded me a lot of Cascade’s coffee blond beer, whatever that thing is called.

Cantillon Kriek 100% Lambic: Yeah…..I think this beer is a little bit better than the Flora Cherry I had recently. God I feel like such an asshole comparing American cherry sours to their Belgian counterparts, they almost always lose. This beer just has an incredible balance of fruit, oak, and funk.

Mikkeller Beer Geek Vanilla Shake: I wonder if they make a weasel variant of this, because that would just be fantastic. So much vanilla here, and it doesn’t taste artificial either!

Upright Provision: MY GOD UPRIGHT WHY DO YOU AGE SO WELL?! This beer was one of my favorites of the night, so subtle and well balanced. This might be my favorite biere de garde ever. I could crush the whole bottle to myself. Some aromatics, with figs, dates, and a tiny bit of tartness. OM NOM NOM.

Wait, I found my glass again! YES! This bottle of West Ashely is very similar to batch 2, with very little apricots, but incredible wine barrel finish with lots of funk.

Ale Apothecary Shirley, you can’t be serious: Ale Apothecary needs to dial back the booze, I just don’t want a 9% sour beer. I don’t. Other than that it tastes great, not a lot of funk, but tons of fruit. This beer is the polar opposite of the bottle of West Ashley we had.

Rare Barrel Map of the Sun: Definitely the most sour of the last three beers, but it strike the balance between the two, and it was fruitier than batch 1 Map of the Sun. Well done Rare Barrel, I might one day get over your shitty as name.

Casey Apricot Fruit Stand: Nice apricot flavor here, but the base beer is just too thin. Mouthfeel was lacking and there wasn’t enough of a backbone to support the apricots. Worst of the stone fruits so far.

de Garde Nectarine Bu: Okay, so this beer is more fruity than Map of the Sun, and just about as sour. I think this and West Ashley are my favorites of the stone fruits. Best thing to do would be to blend them and create a balanced stone fruit sour.

This bottle of 2013 Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze was sublime.

More Beer and Climbing Videos

This is kind of a thing now, mostly because climbing videos are really interesting, but you can tune or tune out whenever you feel like it. No plot, no long action sequences, just something to have in the background that’s neat for the 30% of the time you’re actually watching it.

Kunhenn American Imperial Stout: Definitely the best non-barrel aged stout I’ve had in recent memory. Might have to revisit Founders RIS to make sure.

Hill Farmstead Madness & Civilization #1: Probably the best beer in the series. It smells boozy, but then tastes like chocolate and sweet, sweet bourbon. It’s wonderful.

Hill Farmstead Society & Solitude #4: It has been a very long time since I’ve had this beer, and it’s a fantastic IIPA. Top 10 for sure, and right up there with the best from Alpine, Boneyard, and Barley Brown’s.

Alesmith Kona Coffee Stout: Extremely tasty, with a sweeter coffee profile than Jamaican Blue coffee something something darkside. However, I wish it had some bourbon aspects to it….

The Rare Barrel: This beer is as good as the brewery name of this beer is bad. Fantastic beer, but I will always be bitter at The Rare Barrel for such a pretentious name. I also don’t like how they introduced a reserve society before anyone had even tried their beer (I’m looking at you, Wolves and Hype).

Perennial Sump: I used to hate this beer, but this batch is actually really good! I approve and will actually consider seeking out more Perennial beers that don’t end with “Abraxas” and start with “BA”.

Hill Farmstead Le Sarrasin: This is a fantastic beer, like a stronger, more technologically advanced Arthur. However, if only it had a more complex funky profile…

Success! I had a tough time deciding which beer was better, but I think Le Sarrasin takes it. I don’t know, ask me tomorrow, I will have changed my mind a few times since then.
