Post Pig Tasting

I was a wreck of a person, but I had to hurry home from the beach the next day to meet up with some other friends for a bottle share. I rallied about an hour before everyone arrived, thank god.

I picked up some charcuterie, Dexter was extremely interested in what was going on. Also, of course I fed him a little of it.

Trying to warm up before friends arrived!

Toppling Goliath Double Dry Hop Pseudo Sue: Wow, it’s been ages since I’ve had Toppling Goliath. What a refreshing change of pace from all the NE-style IPAs I’ve been drinking lately!

de Garde Imperial Boysenberry Bu b1: Yep, the original! No stamped labels! Sorry Trevor, I know you don’t like it when I drink old de Garde, but the stuff can be incredible at times! This isĀ  no exception, so sour, but tons of fruit and funk at the same time. If any of you have these left, make sure to get the sediment back into suspension a little bit before opening, it’s way better that way.

Bokkeryder Perzik: Well fuck me, whatever kind of peaches are in this beer, I need to find them and eat them all.

Just some of the other beer we had that day.

Yep, Saint Lamvinus is still my favorite seasonal Cantillon

Kill shot, and I had to work the next day.

The Whales

Best beers of the tasting.

20170125_181027

Toppling Goliath Assassin: Holy mother of barrel! Great viscosity, dark chocolate, huge roast and barrel notes, and not boozy.

20170125_175422

Toppling Goliath Morning Delight: So, this is the third batch of Morning Delight and it is the worst one so far. The finish has something goofy going on with it. Previous batches used to finish with a nice sweet maple note, but this batch is bitter and thin. I wonder what happened?

20170125_182152

Toppling Goliath Barrel Aged Chainsmoker: Really didn’t know anything about this beer, but it turned out to be my favorite of the three Toppling Goliath beers. Honestly, really not getting any smoke here, but it’s delicious anyway.

That was the warm up.

God, so after all that drinking, I have to get up and do it all over again. This time though, stakes are considerably higher, as tonight is whale-slaying night.

IMAG1237

Deschutes Fresh Hop City: Okay, gotta get that blood flowing for some serious liver punishment that is soon to follow. Good beer though, light and very hoppy and floral with minimal bitterness.

IMAG1238 IMAG1239

Oh, well look at that.

IMAG1240

Grote Dorst van ‘t Kasteel: So this beer was blended at Castle Neufcour in Eizeringen in 2010, and is a blend of 17 different lambics. Barely carbonated, this beer is still one of the best lambics that I have ever put into my mouth. This beer probably has the best lemon zest/citrus flavor I’m come across in a lambic, but lacks a little on the back end, where that horse blanket/wet sock funk was nowhere to be found. Oh well, still fucking amazing. Best beer of the night! A+

IMAG1242

WTF KIND OF BASKET IS THAT?! Well, it’s a ghetto ass basket that can house a magnum-sized whale.

IMAG1243

Basket was too flimsy to hold, so we had to dispense it in “water cooler almost empty” fashion.

IMAG1244

Grote Dorst Oude Geuze 2008: Apparently one of only 20 or so magnums, this beer recently sold at auction for lots of money. Unfortunately, this beer is not nearly as good as the 2010 bottle we had just opened. On the other hand, still a pretty good beer. Also, the experience of using that basket was kind of awesome. B+/A-

IMAG1246

Upright 1st Anniversary: God I love old Upright beer. This beer was aged in gin barrels and if anything that gin characteristic has only gotten stronger, aka better. A+

IMAG1249

Don’t mind him, he has serious business to attend to.

IMAG1250

New Belgium La Folie 2009 (cage and corked): God, the caged and corked La Folie’s are always stupendous, it’s a shame they stopped making them. This particular bottle had a ton of cherry presence, even more so than some krieks I’ve had. Had a nice mushroom character too, which can only be found in a few beers, including old lambic and the cage and corked la folies. A+

IMAG1252

Uhhhhh, don’t remember what this one was like.

IMAG1253

Uli/h.ertie Lambik Meets Orval: This particular blend used Drie Fonteinen as the lambic that was blended with Orval. Really tasty, but was a little on the thin side. I expected more Orval flavors in the beer than I actually got. Maybe I had too much palate fatigue? A-

IMAG1254

Yep, we got to use that basket one more time, this time for a 3L of de Garde Imperial Black Raz Bu. Life is hard.

IMAG1255

Deschutes Abyss 2007: Another fantastic beer, and it’s been years since I last had a 2007 Abyss. What a treat! I still think 2010 is better. A+

IMAG1256

Toppling Goliath Morning Delight: Well fuck me, my favorite non-barrel aged stout has decided to show itself. Absurdly tasty, with chocolate, maple syrup, and cinnamon as you slowly drink this beer and relish in its minute-long finish. A+

IMAG1258

Goose Island King Henry: This is much better than the last bottle that I tried, so there is still tons of bottle variation, and there are still some great examples of this beer out there. A+

My poor, poor liver.

Whale Slaying

Saturday was De Garde’s 2nd Anniversary, and a bunch of people flew in from out of town, including some of our friends! So a we call got together to drink some beer. There was some really rare beer thrown in, just for kicks, and to make the time more memorable!

IMAG0138

Hill Farmstead Flora: Might be the best beer that Hill Farmstead makes, and it was tastier than some of the other wine barrel aged saisons we had that night. A

IMAG0140

Casey East Bank: Another very tasty beer, with some nice funk and lemon zest thrown in. I would love to see this beer with some fruit, or gin barrels though. B+

IMAG0141

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze: Still the best beer label in existence, and the beer itself is really good too! It is starting to get more sour though, so maybe drink this one sooner rather than later, unless you like dissolving your teeth! B+

IMAG0142

No idea, but it tastes kind of like Hunahpu.

IMAG0143

Upright Noel: Handwritten sole comp beers are always incredibly good. This is no exception!

IMAG0145

New Belgium La Folie 2007: I’ve only had the pleasure of having a caged and corked La Folie once before, and it was fucking wonderful. This beer was incredible, very tart up front, but a nice complex and earthy finish. A+

IMAG0146

New Belgium La Folie 2008: So, looks like I get to have caged and corked La Folie twice in the same night! This year is slightly better, but both are incredible. Someone at New Belgium needs to realize that they’ve made a terrible mistake in pasteurizing this beer. LET IT LIVE. A+

IMAG0148

Hill Farmstead Ann batch 1: Yeah, so this beer is really old now (at least in terms of HF beers), and it shows. While it was really good, I think Brother Soigne is better then this bottle of Ann, and Flora absolutely crushes it. B+

IMAG0147

Hill Farmstead Ann batch 2: Okay, this fresh bottle is waaaaay better than batch 1. I can kind of see the hype now, but I still think Flora is better. One thing about this beer that’s really impressive though is the super soft mouthfeel. A/A+

IMAG0150

Southampton Black Raspberry Lambic: I honestly never thought I would have this beer again, but my friend from Seattle brought this one and surprised the hell out of me. Still super fucking good. Just as fruity as some of De Garde’s but has more back end funkiness. I can’t believe how well this beer is holding up. Might be better than Cable Car Kriek…..A+

IMAG0151

Goose Island Nuthulu: Ahhh, the best beer that Goose Island has made since Bourbon County Vanilla. Lots of vanilla here, but not cloying at all, with some nice nuttiness at the finish. Top 5 stouts of all time if you ask me. A+

IMAG0152

Crooked Stave Persica batch 1: Another American sour that has aged super well. The peach presence here is great, there is more peach in this beer after 3 years than a lot of peach sours have when they are first released. A+

IMAG0149

Another bottle of Flora, just because.

IMAG0154

Drie Fonteinen Armand ‘4 Zomer: As delicious as the beers were thus far, this is probably a top 3 beer of the night for me. You simply don’t get much better than the Seasons if you want to talk about sour beer. A+

IMAG0155

Toppling Goliath SR-71: Tasty, but still not as good as Assassin. Too much barrel, pour some Nuthulu into it and we’ll be in good shape! B+/A-

IMAG0156

Lost Abbey Cable Car: Been a while since I last had this beer, and it is way more sour than I remember. A

IMAG0158

Goose Island Bourbon County Bramble Rye: This beer continues to improve with age, just because I don’t really like fruit in my stouts I think. Kill all the fruited stouts! A

IMAG0160

Goose Island Proprietors 2014: Cinnamon Bourbon County wooOOO!

IMAG0161

WHY DO MY TASTE BUDS NOT WORK?!

IMAG0162

STILL DOESN”T WORK.

IMAG0163

Palate is broken. I give up.

Going Away Party

One of my friends is moving back to California, so he proposed a bottleshare at his favorite beer shop. Why did it have to be a Wednesday at 7:30PM?

IMAG3698

Short warm-up

IMAG3699

Batch #6, really, really good. Probably the best batch of West Ashley I’ve had. Great balance between funk and apricot.

IMAG3700

Gin bomb.

IMAG3701

Couldn’t taste this one after the previous 2 beers…

IMAG3702

Sour berlinerweiss from the Bruery. Not actually a berliner, but at a measly 8%, it is probably one of the Bruery’s lighter beers.

IMAG3703

Eclipse Rittenhouse Rye: Better than Masterpiece.

IMAG3704 IMAG3705

I like the new Olde Hickory labels. The beer is also good.

IMAG3706 IMAG3708

New bottles from pFriem.

IMAG3707

SOUR.

IMAG3709

NOT GOOD. Veritas 013. As Uli said to me two years ago, “this beer should not have been sold”

IMAG3710

Crooked Stave Batch 60: Like a super fancy Hose.

IMAG3711 IMAG3712

Firestone Walker does good sour beers, but should sell them in big bottles.

IMAG3713

Infected.

IMAG3714

Actually pretty good!

IMAG3715

Tastes like……Christmas.

IMAG3716

Might be my favorite beer from Trillium so far! Very good in this sea of sours and stouts!

IMAG3717

Why would you bury wizards?!

IMAG3720

BOOOOZY.

IMAG3721

Addition of coffee ice cream is nice.

IMAG3722

Troegs: This brings back lots of nostalgia for my college days when Flying Mouflan was still just Scratch #4

IMAG3723

This is an old bottle, it’s very good, but a shadow of its former self.

IMAG3724

I don’t even remember this beer.

IMAG3725

This tasted like water. It was meh, like most Side Projects I’ve had. Perhaps I lack the nuance and sophistication required to appreciate these.

IMAG3726

Toppling Goliath SR-71: Remember a little while back when I had the new batch of Assassin and said it was really, really good (which was way better than b1 btw)? This beer is not nearly as tasty. It spent too long in the barrels in my opinion, and the barrel character of the beer has basically eliminated any flavor of stout this beer used to have.

IMAG3727

This was tasty! I still hate the name of the brewery though.

IMAG3728

Ending on lambic. Time to go home and sleeeeeeeep

Tasting at Growler Guys

My liver was not in the greatest shape last Sunday, and there was a bottle share that afternoon. Sometimes you just have to suck it up and rally. This was one of those days.

IMAG3549

Notice the baby pours. The brain is strong, but the liver is weak and tender.

IMAG3550

Hill Farmstead Madness and Civilization #1: Super roasty and delicious. A long time ago we went through the Madness and Civilization set, and #1 was the tastiest. Fast forward half a year or so, and the beer is still fantastic.

IMAG3551

10 Barrel Cucumber Crush: Okay, this feels much better.

IMAG3552

Cigar City Double Barrel Hunahpu’s: Look at the upper left corner. His expression basically tells you how good the beer is. That is all.

IMAG3553

Hill Farmstead Norma: Really delicious, but it’s such a pain in the butt to trade for now! BAH VERMONT HOARDERS!!!!

IMAG3554

Westbrook Tequila Barrel Mexican Cake: This is the best use for tequila. It’s a terrible liquid but it isn’t so bad once it’s used to age beer! Yay beer!

IMAG3555

De Garde Imperial Blackberry Bu: Very tasty, but this bottle gushes. Beware.

IMAG3556

Toppling Goliath Assassin: This is much better than the last time I tried it. I did try batch 1 the first time, so it might just be a difference in batches. Anyways, this beer is great and is very tasty. That being said, don’t get raped on the beer forums in order to get one.

IMAG3560

Again, upper left for beer rating.

IMAG3561

DUCK DUCK GOOZE!

IMAG3562

15-hit combo.

Toppling Goliath, Mmmmm

Yep, Toppling Goliath is a top 5 IPA brewery in the United States, hands down.

IMAG3008

Toppling Goliath Zeelander: So much nelson sauvin hops in this beer I can barely handle it. I’ll just shove my face in it.

IMAG3009

Toppling Goliath King Sue: This is one of my favorite beer labels ever, also, this beer is insanely good, even though it’s 6 months old.
