First nice day of the year!

Bright, sunny, and warm. So of course I didn’t go outside…I hit up breweries instead.

IMAG2742

Commons Brewery….light farmhouse ales will do a dehydrated soul good.

IMAG2743

Brought in a Hill Farmstead Birth of Tragedy for kicks. Also, no I did not drink this myself.

IMAG2744

Next stop was BeerMongers for the Timbers vs Rapids game. Have to have some nice craft while watching referees botch calls.

Notorious!

Already faded….I’ll just spring for more Hop Venom next time.

IMAG2731

Blend Love

Had to crack a bottle from this year’s release to see what it’s like!

IMAG2687

Mmmmmm…..creepy dude with a beard.

IMAG2730

Pretty beer, nice ruby hue to it. Not a lot of fruit on the nose, and this batch is very, very dry. There’s some raspberry on the back end, but nothing close to what the old batch of Blend Love had. It’s very good, but I hope age will help this beer out, because the last batch was absolutely fantastic. B+/A-

Gueuze and Oysters

Yeah, weird pairing right? But this pairing is absolutely genius! I’m going to have to do this on my own in the future. Oysters…good….gueuze…good…..add them together and you could break the space-time continuum.

It was from this moment that I knew I wasn’t going to leave that house sober….

IMAG2702

Cantillon Lou Pepe Gueuze 2008: First time having LP Gueuze, and it’s really, really good. Turns out it’d be one of the best beers of the night! A+

IMAG2703

Armand ‘4 Herfst: Looks like this beer gets to make another appearance, and it’s still just as good as I remember. Might be the best beer of the night. A+

IMAG2704

Block 15 Golden Canary 2011: Really tasty, but doesn’t quite hold up against the competition so far. It’s sweeter than I remember, but I don’t think I’ve had the 2011 batch before. A-

IMAG2705

Commons Maybelle: Solid, but this time it just tasted like water. The other beers were far to aggressively sour and funky.

IMAG2706

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze: One of my biggest wants, and I finally got to try it. This beer is SOUR. Just smelling it makes me involuntarily pucker up. Not so much funk, but I can’t really tell because I’m still crying from the sourness. Awesome beer. A+

Before…..

IMAG2711

and after.

IMAG2720

Drie Fonteinen Golden Blend: Really, really good. I guess the last bottle I had was kind of off? A+

IMAG2721

Breakside Postmodern Lambic: Don’t remember much about this one…

IMAG2722

Whales….very few bottles made of this beer. Apparently it came from France and was made with Cantillon yeast?

IMAG2724

Block 15 Super Nebula: Stupid good. A+

IMAG2726

Bleh

IMAG2725

Don’t remember this one in detail either! Woooo!

IMAG2712

Hill Farmstead Florence: Good, but HF can do soo  much better. B+

IMAG2713

We also did a blind tasting between 2 boons, beatification, oude gueze, classic gueuze, and tilquin. My ranking was in order of best to worst: Beatification, oude gueze, tilquin, classic gueuze, and then the two boons.

Total rankings were: Beatification, tilquin, oude gueze, classic gueuze, and then the two boons.

IMAG2714

Alpine Pure Hoppiness: Stupid good. The hoppiness was a fantastic break from the sour onslaught. A-

IMAG2715

Armand 4′ Winter: Another repeat, and just as delicious. Another top beer emerges! A+

IMAG2716

Cantillon Cuvee des Champions: Haven’t gotten to tick this one before, and it’s good! A

IMAG2717

Cantillon Iris: It’s been two years since I last had this beer, and it’s really different than I remember. Still good though. A

IMAG2718

Bleh bleh blehgh blend!

IMAG2719

Drunk.

PDX has it’s perks

One of which is getting tasty Russian River sours on tap!

IMAG2680

Russian River Sanctification: This is their 100% brett beer. It’s been a long time since I’ve had this one, and it’s really good. A-/A

If Only…

If only this glass was filled with a John Wakefield Brewing Berliner! Oh well, at least I have his glass…

IMAG2682

Yeah….

This stout is pretty much perfect. Hard to find anything wrong with Bourbon Barrel Plead the 5th, and it comes in 12 oz. bottles. Perfect for taking on solo!

IMAG2681

Delicious!

Blend Love

Got lucky and got my 4 bottle allotment!

IMAG2683

Gotta love pitchers of Blend Love! It’s not as good on draft as I expected, but that was true for last year’s batch as well. I hope this batch still has to huge fruity aspect in the bottle.

IMAG2685

Little bit of Barrel Aged Seven batch 3: Still young, I’d give it 6 months or so to funk up more.

IMAG2686

Blend Edmunds: Stupid good. I’ve missed this beer 3 times now! About god damn time I got to try it. It doesn’t disappoint. It was better than the other two beers by a good margin.

Nice Change

It’s been a while since I opened a bottle of stout and finished it myself. I feel like a big boy, no longer drinking 2 oz. pours of beer!

IMAG2677

Central Waters Bourbon Barrel Stout: Better than the last time I had it for sure. Not nearly as watery! B/B+

Upright Barleywine?!

Yes…Upright can brew barleywines! This version that was aged in big bottom whiskey barrels was very solid. Nice and dry without too much booze.
