Recovery Beers

After having the box set, we decided to keep going because we had all brought really tasty bottles to open since it had been a while since we were all in the same place at the same time.

IMAG3120

Sante Adairius Westly: Since this beer isn’t fresh anymore, some of the apricots have faded, but there is still tons to like here. White wine, funky apricots, and a nice grassiness put this beer right at the top of the sour apricot scene. A+

IMAG3125

Fifty Fifty Pappy Van Winkle Eclipse: Probably the best Eclipse variant I’ve ever had. That PVW barrel really did wonders here. You know, because I can 100% tell the difference between barrels from different distilleries. Also, my penis grants wishes.

IMAG3126

Goose Island Nuthulu: Best beer of the night. Toasted hazelnuts up front with a big hit of vanilla on the back end, but without interfering with the base stout flavors. I’m not a huge fan of overwhelming vanilla, but this hits the perfect amount of vanilla for a beer. I need some of dis. NOW. A++

This is a surprise…

Lost Abbey Box Set

$700 box of beer? Why not.

IMAG3100

But first, I should warm up with a glass of Hop Venom, just to get the palate going.

IMAG3101

Oh hai there.

IMAG3102

Lost Abbey Track #1: Tons of oak and tannins here. Slightly acetic, but we’re off to a pretty good start.

IMAG3103

Lost Abbey Track #2: Pretty good, I get some cherries, but no peaches. Also, note the big boy ABV of 12.5%.

IMAG3104

Lost Abbey Track #3: I don’t remember what I thought of this one…

IMAG3105

Lost Abbey Track #4: Meh, really didn’t like this one.

IMAG3107

Lost Abbey Track #5: Pretty tart but with crazy jammy aspects. Probably the best one of the bunch.

IMAG3108

I give up, let’s just have the rest of the photos.

Step 2: Drink keg.

Chaos

IMAG3080

Barley Browns Chaos: Very good, but this CDA leans more towards stout than IPA. Chocolate and fudge dominates this beer, with hops as kind of an afterthought. I would consider this beer to be a hoppy stout more than anything. If you’re looking for something that’s more in alignment with CDAs, look no further than Barley Browns’ Turmoil.

When making fun of North Korea, drink beer.

I’ve been wanting to watch the Interview for a while now, and thanks to North Korea, I can watch it from the comfort of my own home. Seeing this movie makes me want to revisit Team America: World Police because movies that make fun of North Korea are way more entertaining than they should be.

IMAG3059

Pelican Mother of all Storms: Really delicious this year, seems to get more vanilla each time I try a bottle. I also noticed that the bottle now says that the beer is bottled in Tillamook instead of Pacific City, so I wonder if the original location is still brewing beer. Also, sweet reflection of my buddy’s bottle opener on the beer glass was not intentional, but awesome.

IMAG3061

De Garde Corbeau Noir: Dark sours are really hard to pull off, and I think that as a style, it’s dumb. That being said, this beer is pretty good for a dark sour. More tart than the Origins Grand Cru I had the other day, but there is still enough malt to make this not taste like a vinegar bomb.

IMAG3063

Upright Undercurrent: It’s been a very long time since I opened up some of my Sole Composition bottles, and I wanted to fix that. Undercurrent is a strong saison with currants(?) added, or something to that effect. It’s a nice, clean saison with some jammy flavors. Upright doesn’t really do anything that plays to the ends of the flavor spectrum, so everything is in moderation, but executed perfectly. A

IMAG3064

Upland Malefactor: AN UPLAND BEER THAT DIDN’T TEAR MY FACE OFF!

IMAG3065

De Garde Imperial Chery Blu Bu: This is a tasty beer, but not quite on the same level as Cherry Raz Bu. That being said, we thought that this beer could use a little more time in the bottle to allow the flavors to integrate and mellow out a little more. B+/A-

IMAG3066

Upright Wedding Beer: This beer is Upright at it’s best, bright, citrusy, with a little bit of gin aromatics. I would put this in my top 10 saisons without a second thought. A+

That’s it for Oregon

Last night was Oregon’s best chance at a winning a title game for years. Unfortunately, they had to play against a team that looked like a bunch of Uruk-Hai led by an enormous quarterback, who, after shrugging of Oregon linebackers over and over again, started to remind me a lot of this guy:

fotrd2-006161

Anyways, a bunch of beer was consumed, some of it in happiness when Oregon scored, and most of it in sadness and Elliot and Jones proceeded to march through the Oregon defense.

IMAG3067
New Glarus Cranbic: Way sweeter than I expected. Want moar sour.

IMAG3069

De Garde Currant Gin Bu: Moar sourness achieved!

IMAG3071

Hill Farmstead Brother Soigne: Still one of HF’s best saisons, regardless of price.

IMAG3072

Surly Pentagram: 6.66% ABV? They totally didn’t water down this beer to get to that ABV.

IMAG3074

Sante Adairius Cask 200: I would say this beer is better than Arthur by a hair, but Brother Soigne takes it. I’ll just have to get more bottles of this to really decide.

IMAG3075

De Garde The Boysen: Stupid good. Jammy and funky. I look forward to more De Garde sours that have spent more time in the barrels than their berliners.

IMAG3076

Commons Creme de Peche: Less peach than I anticipated, but my mouth is also ruined at this point. Also, my happiness and hopes of Oregon winning against OSU were also ruined at this point.

IMAG3077

Lost Abbey Duck Duck Gooze: Defeat beer.

IMAG3078

Upright Fantasia: One defeat beer wasn’t enough, we needed two.

IMAG3079

Bed time.

This did a number on my liver

Binge watched Entourage and drank a bunch of beer with some friends. It made my liver suffer.

IMAG3030

Upright Fatali Four 2013: Old beer, but it’s amazing. Heat has subsided a little bit, but the funk has gone off the charts. I love this beer, it’s great and I still haven’t experienced anything else like it from another brewery. A

IMAG3031

Allagash Ghoulschip: This is what all pumpkin beers should be like. Nice tartness, with a pronounced smoky toast flavor (from the pumpkin seeds) at the end. B+

IMAG3032

De Garde Belle Ensemble: This beer is super funky and SOUR. If all of De Garde’s older sours are going to be like this, we have a good couple years to look forward to! A

IMAG3033

Hair of the Dog Matt: This beer is wonderful as always, so delicious, with a side of diabeetus.

IMAG3035

Crooked Stave Origins Grand Cru: Haven’t had this beer in about a year or so, and it tastes even better than I remember. Wonderful mellowness with a nice savory finish.

IMAG3036

Block 15 Premiere Annee: This beer has aged pretty well, and I’m not sure if I could pick this out from the standard geuzes from Cantillon, Drie Fonteinen, and Tilquin.

IMAG3037

Block 15 Golden Canary: This most recent batch just isn’t as good as the original. For srs, batch 1 is best.

IMAG3038

8.9%?! This beer ruined me.

Kernel Makes Sours?!

And they are pretty good too!

IMAG3027

A little bit of Upright

I’ve shown too much love for De Garde recently, time to switch things up!

IMAG3023

Upright 5th Anniversary Saison: Unfortunately, I don’t have any of these….but it’s a gin barrel aged saison…so I love it. A

IMAG3024

Upright Fantasia: This beer is better than Imperial Peach Bu, but it is also twice the cost. Whether it is worth the premium over Imperial Peach Bu, you’ll have to find out. Anyways, this year’s version is more sour and peachy than last year’s batch, and that’s a good thing. I picked up my full allotment the other day and will probably let them sit for a while to see how a few more months changes this beer. A
