Upright White Truffle Gose
Kind of a let down, I really don’t get any truffle until the beer is almost room temp. Sad face.
A Dark Saison I Like?!
It’s true….this is actually really good. Similar to Loak from De Garde, and those who read this blog know what I think of that beer. MMMMM. A-
Also, one week until I get back from China and head to De Garde’s Anniversary party!!!
Imperial Hop Bu
Went to the release on Saturday, and had a great time before getting drunk and watching the Timbers tie against Chivas USA. Again.
De Garde Imperial Hop Bu: Doesn’t taste like it’s been hopped, but I guess that’s the point. Tastes like a mimosa! A+
De Garde 3S: If you don’t know what this is, you’re not important enough 🙂 It’s doing really nicely, can’t wait for this beer to be ready!
De Garde/Side Project Saison Desay – Chardonnay Barrel: Huge pineapple presence and big tartness has pretty much turned this saison into an american wild ale. Not that it’s a bad thing! A
Homebrew Peach Sour: Some guys brought this in, and it was awesome.
De Garde Biere de Garde: Yep. Lots of “de gardes” in this name.
Armand ‘4 Lente: Yeah….definitely a top 10 beer of all time for me. A++
Hill Farmstead Convivial Suarez: I really like hibiscus in saisons. It’s a great flavor to have and it makes the beer look pretty! I hope De Garde makes one with hibiscus soon!

Drinking in Cologne
So I’m in China right now, but I got to finish these posts somehow!
Time to bring on a tasting with Uli himself!!!!

H.ertie Kickbacks: This beer if freaking amazing. A+
Not a bad hoppy beer from Europe. They don’t really know how to do these things though.
Upright Fantasia: Drinking like a peachy champion. However, I still maintain that as good as this beer is, the label is simply awful. A
Upright Jeux D’eau: Drinking better than before, maybe I shouldn’t have sent out so many bottles to people…A-
35 year old berliner weisse: no big deal.
Don’t remember much about this one, other than it being really interesting.
Beer on left was awful, beer on right was being slowly opened because it’s a gusher
I was at this for quite some time, but it was worth it.
Oh yeah, director of brewing operations at Victory Brewing in Philly was with us. Cool dude.
I like these stainless growlers, and apparently they do counter pressure fills now!
Hair of the Dog Matt: Yep, we had another one.
Lost Abbey Veritas 012: I was underwhelmed. Probably because the other beer was so good?
Nope nope nope. Also, it’s getting pretty late, and I’m feeeeeelin’ it.

10 Barrel’s Apricot Crush and Cucumber Crush. Absolutely delicious!
Timbers vs Chivas Shenanigans
Fucking referees ruining that game! UGH.
I think I like blend 2, 1, and 3 in that order.
Goose Island Bourbon County Proprietors: Yeah…..this beer is still fucking amazing. Might be one of the best noses in a stout and the flavor is nice and rich with bourbon, chocolate, and toasted coconut. A+
Cigar City Hunahpu’s: Best had fresh! I think this beer loses some of the great cinnamon flavors if you hold on to it for too long. A
Block 15 Super Nebula 2010: Dem batch 1 whales. I think 2012 is the best year.
Side Project Brett Venture #2: yeah, this beer is completely different than the other bottle I had a few months ago. I wonder if it’s the age difference or just huge bottle variation. Not a whole lot of pineapple flavor in this one.
Cantillon Lou Pepe Gueuze 2010: Delicious as always! Now I’m going to hoard the remaining bottles that I have and age them FOREVER!!!! Nice sweetness with good funk and sourness. Cool cheesy quality as well!
Crooked Stave Wild Wild Brett Violet: Yeah…best beer they make after Persica batch 1 and Waelzblood. Nice and sour, not too much funk, and huge fruit notes! I wish I could have tasted this better, but I was absolutely smashed at this point. Frankly, I’m surprised that I could take a decent photo in the state that I was in…
Also, I’m going to be behind the Great Firewall of China for the next few weeks, so it’s going to be a little quiet around here. Damn China, what a beer wasteland.
Drinking in Antwerp!
We met up with some of Europe’s huge tickers (rate beer thingy) at a bar in Antwerp that was opened just for this tasting. God I feel special.
But first, we had to travel through Brussels. So naturally we went to Cantillon. 50N4E was delicious.
So much beer on the Thalys high-speed train…
Yep, bar is shut. Let’s get started.
Orval Green: I like this more than Orval, much more crushable.
Block 15 Peche: Yep, still my favorite peach beer. A+
This pilsner was garbage. D-
De Garde Loak: Tasty, but it has a weird flavor going on this time, maybe it’s something to do with this particular bottle. B
Cantillon 50N4E: Yeah, I really have no problems drinking this multiple times in a week. A+
H.ertie Framfort 8: This is an incredible Uli blend, the best that I’ve ever had. So much sweet raspberry while maintaining funk and sour along with a nice soft finish is pretty miraculous. Might be the best beer of the whole trip. A++
Goose Island Proprietors: Yeah, this beer is still fucking amazing. Best variant since Vanilla! A+
Hair of the Dog Matt: Great change of pace from a bunch of sour beer. A+
Yep, getting drunk!!!!!
Then we went over to Kulminator…and got smashed.
Drie Fonteinen Hommage: FINALLY TICKED THIS FUCKER YEHHHHHHH! It was absolutely amazing. Best fruited beer I’ve had from Drie Fonteinen! A+
